Is there any such thing as a waterproof cosy toes for a 2-3 year old?

I am looking for a waterproof product to cover my daughters legs during the winter months as she is in a hip spica cast. If the weather is drizzly I'm forever putting on and off her raincover to keep her cast dry and she hates being enclosed if it's just a light shower.

Normal cosytoes are too small as her legs are set apart, just over the width of her pushchair and ones designed for wheelchairs are too big!

Any suggestions? (and no, I can't sew!)

Try [www.stay-put-blankets.com Stayput Blankets]]. I think they may do made-to-order ones, or specialneeds models. You may need to contact them directly, it may not be mentioned on the website.

what about one of these.

mucho ££££ though and probably not big enough.

could you sew something simple using a waterproof backed picnic blanket? or use sew on studs?

I'm sure someone posted a very easy pattern for making a buggy snuggle on here once; I'll see if I can find a link.

I'd looked at the Buggysnuggle - it's not big enough.

Stay puts look good though...will look into those further...

Thanks.

Would the childrens leg covers work ? Tanni and Anni have some nice ones, or what about one of their childrens capes ?

LoopyLena · 02/10/2008 21:00

The leg covers wouldn't work I don't think, as they are quite shaped, if you get my meaning! They look too narrow at the top for the size of dd's cast.

The cape pictures aren't very clear, I can't tell how far down they come. It's her legs I need covering so the cast doesn't get wet, she would have her coat on the top half.

So far the Stay put blankets are looking like my best option, they say they will last until age 3, DD turned 2 last week, but with the cast on she's the size of a 3 year old, I only need it to get me through the winter though, so I think it would work.

just got these for my double.

they are frigging massive. and fit the special needs jogger.

bottom zips open if she's really really tall. but they really are massive. i'd be amased if she doesn't fit in.

On the adult cape picture, you can see that it comes right down to the feet of the wearer, so should cover the cast completely.

XL Kaiser??

LoopyLena · 02/10/2008 23:44

The outlast snuggles look really long but how wide are they? DD's hips are abducted and bent at the knee so it's the width thats more important than the length.

onelittlelion · 02/10/2008 23:45

The Kaiser XL might be good as they get wider at the bottom too. They are really long. My ds is 2 and stil looks bit lost in it! Baby2childhood used to offer discount to mnetters too so mayb worth asking if still do.

elmoandella · 03/10/2008 07:59

outlast are very wide.but padded. but i think you can contact they people and tell them what your after it for. they would let you return if its too small if you keep tags on to try it out i think.they are a great company to deal with.they would arrange courier return also for free.

LoopyLena · 03/10/2008 13:35

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions

Just thought I'd let you know I've not found a solution yet! The stay put blankets are not wide enough for the position of her cast and TBH I don't think the others look any wider. DD has been cast with her knees very bent this time as her left knee was subluxing and they had to get that into a good position. Her hips are abducted and internally rotated, so the lower legs stick out to the sides quite a way! I think I'll have to get a waterproof blanket and wrap it around her legs!

Looked at the outlast - they are 18 inches wide and DD is 23 inches wide from foot to foot!!! The kaisers are about 3cm wider than the outlast - but still not wide enough!!!

can't you get a cheap sleeping bag and spray it with waterproofing stuff from millets or somewhere, or cover it with oilcloth? i know you'd probably want to cut the front down or customise it by cutting half way down the unzipped side, but i'm sure it would work...
we had a really big one for a cycle trailer, by a company called chariot carriers (goretex, fleece lined and waterproof backed), but i sold it a few months ago...

reiver · 24/10/2008 22:31

Have you asked anyone if they'll make a special size to fit? I had one made by Snugglytots a few years ago for a similar problem and they made it wider & only charged a little extra. Some companies custom make for wheelchair use/special needs so might be worth googling? eg www.toesycose.co.uk

LoopyLena · 24/10/2008 22:57

Those toesycose ones are lovelly - but not waterproof.

Adapting a sleeping bag goes little further than sowing on a button which is about all I'm capable of...and even then I manage to stick the needles in my fingers!!!!

Ah, was going to suggest another sitewww.chunklemunkle.co.uk until I saw the waterproof requirement!
Have you tried asking on a specialist forum like www.steps-charity.org.uk?

i second the kaiser form baby to childhood - my toddler loves his and has loads of room for growth and bottom zips off so muddy wellys can peek out too.

LoopyLena · 18/12/2008 00:31

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the suggestions, but DD's legs are almost 2ft apart from foot to foot, making it impossible to get a cosy toes wide enough.

What I have done is buy a waterproof picnic blanket from Atlantic Blankets
and my cousin has very kindly turned it into a fab cosy toes for me.
