I'm a PlayPlax purest (ie either born too soon for the fancy shapes or just somehow missed out) but have found for my DDs what I think is the modern equivalent (in the same great transparent colours that I loved as a kid)... Magna Tiles. I've so far only been able to find them in the US and was gobsmacked when I saw the price (so bought the smallest box) but they really are great. They come in several shapes and have magnets on the edges so they simply click together. Brilliant. Loved by children (mine are 2 and 4) and adults alike... and good for boys and girls. Our boy cousins built rocket ships, the girls build houses and put Playmobil characters to bed in them.

So, sorry to join this thread when it's done and dusted but stumbled across it searching for good old PlayPlax and had to share the Magna Tile news!!!

the wooden blocks are called "Dienes"

You can still buy most of what you have talked about from educational catologues

try googling the following

consortium
hope educatiuonal
kent county supplies
GLS

They are the ones we use most at the school where I work.
