Minimum age for Group2 car seat?

My mum is looking after DS 2 days a week, and we have decided to get another car seat to go in her car.

DS is just 2 (a couple of weeks ago), and weighs 32lb/15kg. In our car he's in a Group 1 car seat.

When looking at the weight ranges it seems that the maximum for a Group 1 car seat is 18kg, and that a Group 2 car seat is for children from 15kg (ages 4 and upwards). However the Group 2 carseats don't seem to have the 5 point harness, and I'm not convinced that it would be suitable for a 2 year old.

So we could go for another Group 1 carseat, but we run the risk that he will outgrow it fairly soon - within about 6 months to a year presumably? Even at 3 I think he may be too young for the Group 2 carseats.

What have others done? Will I get to the point where he's too heavy for his Group 1 seat but too young for a Group 2 one? Or am I just anticipating him growing more quickly than he actually will?

We have a group 1-2-3 car seat for DS (Evolva 123) as I wanted him to stay in a five point harness for as long as possible. However, he isn't particularly heavy (at 4.10 he is probably still under 18 kg, but once he was about 16 kg and 4.5 I felt happy with him being not in a five point harness).

DD is just 3 and still in the group 1 seat - she is now probably over 15kg but I will keep her in the group 1 carseat as long as possible.

Children do tend to put on weight less quickly when they are a bit older or at least that has been the case for mine.

Group 2 carseats without a 5-point harness are bad news, or so say the experts www.unece.org/trans/doc/2008/wp29grsp/ECE-TRANS-WP29-GRSP-2008-09e.pdf.
I decided in the end to buy the Britax Junior Traveller. It's just safer.

I also have the evolva 123 as the old car seat we had had buckle crunch in dh's new car and it seemed pointless to get another group 1 seat when ds was not that far off the 40lbs maximum limit at the age of 2.

p.s. dd didnt move to a group 2 seat until she was nearly 4 as we needed her old group 1 seat for ds
