As in title, after fighting the washing machine for over 2 years I think it's time to get a new one. Can't afford a lot but I don't want one which will break after a couple of years either, I don't want much do I? .

i am just about to make a Sarnie but will be back.

My LG is a total workhorse and has been for a couple of years now. I have four very dirty children (3 boys) and a dirty dh too so it's on day after day after day and there's never been anything wrong with it.

Which? rates five makes as 'above average' for reliability; three notoriously expensive ones (Miele, Bosch and Siemens) and two that I think have a lower price range (Tricity-Bendix and Zanussi-Electrolux).

I'll have a look at the less expensive Best Buys in a mo.

Cheapest Best Buy (I think - I've asked for a list ordered by price but it quite clearly isn't) is the Candy CM1146, which comes in just under £270 from Asda inc delivery. Cleaning is good, let down by noisiness and long programmes. Candy are average for reliability.

Randomidiot (sounds cruel calling you that) could you find out which ones they recommend, would prefer a cheaper one to run (energy and water etc) but the most important thing really is reliability (I don't actually know what Which base their ratings on). I'm about to start Uni as a single parent so will struggle to replace one in the next 5 yrs or so. I've only had my £450 Hotpoint for 4 1/2 years

I have a bosch, which is fab. I deliberatly chose a bosch as my parents kept going to the ripe old age of 11 [with tlc and spare parts]

I've heard hotpoint have become less reliable recently, as they've been taken over, but can't remember by who.

I have a Candy and have had it since DD was born - nearly 11 years ago!

It's still going strong now ... but maybe I've just been lucky as I know they're not renowned for their reliability really.

Bosch are fab - I have what I assume is an older version of this model (WAE24363GB) - 6kg, 1200 rpm, time display (shows how long to go which is dead useful) & it's brilliant . It's my second Bosch washer, its predecessor lasted about 10 years.

Miele are better & last longer but cost twice as much so it's a bit swings & roundabouts.

sorry....took me longer to make my sarnie as I had to mop up kleaking water from my crappy JL fridge.

Another good thing about Bosches is that it's dead easy to take the front off & get into the pump filter if it gets jammed (eg with money, hair grips, bobbles) - with some machines you have to call an engineer out.

Other sub-£300 models (just list price, not looking at delivery now) are the Whirlpool
AWO/D5516 (no significant weaknesses, quieter than other cheaper models, Whirlpool again average reliability), and John Lewis JLWM1203 (noisy spin, again average reliability). Cheapest highly reliable 'premium' brand machine is the Bosch WLX 24162, widely available, excellent 30 degree wash but long and noisy cotton wash - I have a Bosch, it's been trouble-free for nearly seven years.

On a quick inspection I'd be tempted by two Zanussi-Electrolux models, the ZWF14581 or ZWF16581 (probably the latter, it scores marginally better and is marginally cheaper, and looks more widely available). Above average reliability, not too noisy, energy and water-efficient, only letdowns are poor rinsing overall for the former and poor cotton rinse for the latter. In the mid £300s.

I have one of the Bosch Exxcels. Can't remember which but it's fab

I would recommend Bosch too,Mine has never broken in 5 years and live in a very hard water area.

You might be able to pick one up 2nd hand.My db got one for his student flat for £150.
