Another boring thread from Twinkle. Thanks to good old Scottish Hydro Electric we need to cut our heating costs by 40%. Should I get oil heaters, non-oil eco heaters, convector or panel heaters to use in the bedrooms instead of our storage heaters?

Which would work out cheapest for low level heating in the late evening, overnight and early morning? I know they all cost the same KW for KW, but one type must be better than another for different applications. And I'm getting very confused...

good thread, I am living in a house with electric storage heaters in some rooms, no heating in the bathroom, kitchen and one bedroom, so I am very interested in what is the cheapest option... our electric bill last year was 3 times dearer over winter with just one storage heater on low for only the coldest days.

my dc's bedroom hasn't got any heating, so I put an oil storage heater in there... again only when it was truly baltic.

We do have a wood burning stove which heats the living room, it is great and very cheap to run (in the NE of Scotland), we get old whiskey barrels, the smell of different whiskeys very appealing.... I wish it was heating the water, our landlords are lovely, but the solar panel is not much use in the winter months.

I know Kbaby - I wasn't having a dig at you. If you could find anything out that would be great. It's hard finding time to ring them as they close around DS's bedtime I think.

Aefondkiss - we're in NE Scotland too and we're hopefully using our savings to get a wood burning stove installed this winter. Where do you get the whisky barrels from - that sounds fab! I really sympathise with the storage heater situation - we have found exactly the same thing. Apparently our usage is through the roof in terms of what's "normal" or even "high", yet we are apparently using our storage heater(s) exactly right. They're terrible things.

And it really bugs me that in all this news coverage about rising fuel costs, nobody considers those of us stuck on these expensive tarriffs with storage heaters. I wouldn't mind paying the huge cost quite so much if we actually felt warm at any point in winter. But having to wear three jumpers, having chillblains all winter, and having a huuuge bill I find just a tad annoying!
