recipe for play do??
manna · 12/02/2003 13:30
does anyone have a recipe to make play do - people always tell me you can make it out of flour & salt, but how? Any ideas....?

I used to have the recipe manna, it is dead easy to make but I won't try to give it to you out of my head cos I'd get the proportions wrong! It also has oil and cream of tartar in it - someone else is bound to have it.

Oh - here we go - got this from CBeebies off google:
1 cup of water
1 tablespoon of oil
1 heaped cup of plain flour
cup of salt
2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
food colouring as required
(I forgot about the water). Mix it all up and heat it in a saucepan, stirring, until it suddenly all sticks together in a big lump.
If you divide the mix before you add the colouring you can have 2 colours.
Keep it in an airtight container (a plastic bag will do) and it will stay soft for ages. I think the cream of tartar stops it going bad.
Have fun!

manna, I just checked out a couple more sites on google and they both say only half a cup of salt (but also less flour) so you might want to experiment!
Also, forgot to mention, it is a bit greasy - aprons are a very good idea.

thanks janh - just the thing for a rainy afternoon!!!!

I got this from an earlier board- have used it several times it works well and keeps for ages and ages in the fridge.
Playdough
1 cup plain flour
half cup salt
2 tbspns cream of tartar
1 tbspn cooking oil
1 cup water
food colouring
Place dry ingredients in a saucepan. Add oil and then water and mix well. (You can put the food colouring in later but I find that if you add it to the water it's more even.) Cook over a medium heat, stir constantly until dough becomes thicker and does not stick to the saucepan or feel sticky or tacky. (Make sure you don't undercook it as it doesn't work out!) Remove from heat and allow to cool. Can be used immediately or stored in plastic wrap in the fridge (or the cupboard in an airtight container if it is cool weather!) (TIP: Let it dry on the saucepan and scrape it off - if you soak the pan it goes gluggy and is a lot messier to clean later!) Keeps for ages and the kids love it, so much better to use than the shop stuff! Non-toxic, but so salty they usually won't try it twice!

Excellent I've been meaning to dig out a recepie for ages.
BTW I think you can also add essential oils to it to make it smell nicer. Fancy lavander myself or tea tree would be good to reduce the passing on of bugs!
Scatterbrain · 12/02/2003 16:15
Yes you can add essential oils - but be careful !
I added lavender to one batch and lemon to another that I made for my dd's toddler group and one of the children got a very slight rash on his hands ! Also - using lemon was a daft idea as one child tried to eat it !!!
You can also add fine glitter which my dd loves !
