Is anyone else going to buy a sony reader?

I'm in love. I never ever buy gadgets but I have to have one. The thought of being able to carry around 160 books has really excited me!

DH thinks I'll never use it.

Is anyone else tempted?

I'm sure in a few years the technology will be even better. But even so, you can read war and peace five times over before you have to charge the battery since it only uses power when it turns a page.

You can see I've really been sucked in can't you

Reader and books are comparable to the cd player and the MP3.

Somebody mentioned browsing othe people's bookshelves but I like browsing CD racks too! We haven't all done away with CD's just because we have the MP3 players though. The two things have different purposes.

The value of the reader is in the portability and convenience like the MP3 player. I can't see that it won't take off.

At home we will still have bookcases for special or much loved books but the reality is that we probably have loads of books that we will never read again but which are taking up shelf space and the reader will help with that. You buy the books read them and then delete them or store them on a hard drive somewhere.

But there will be no substitute for those gorgeous books that we come back to time and time again and which look good to have around.

No, No, No not like a cd and mp3 player like a record player and an mp3 player and record players are dead.

I agree with Twig et al Books have their own feel, smell etc, You can read in the bath and the pages go all crinkly. I hate this reader thing!

Niecie · 05/09/2008 13:11

No sorry not like the record player at all. CD's killed off record players long before the MP3 came along!

Madlentileater · 05/09/2008 13:11

any thoughts on these and sn?
dp noticed on holiday that ds can read no prob when he is looking at a DS console (my mum has one) but resists books, poss due to the holding, pages not flat, i don't know (he has dyspraxia, and poss dyslexia)- wondered if that would help, but reluctant to spend that much on a hunch. For myself books win every time, though.

Niecie · 05/09/2008 13:13

Sorry that was to say I am not trying to start an argument, not that I am glad to see the back of records!

But really I haven't bought a record for a good 20 years and MP3's haven't been around that long.

Botbot · 05/09/2008 13:15

Won't be bothering with it myself.

Twiglett's post has just made me all misty-eyed.

ahundredtimes · 05/09/2008 13:17

Madlentileater - it's perhaps to do with the amount of text on a page do you think? On the console I imagine there is less text than on a page of a book.

I'm quite interested in them. I'm going to go and have a look at one, but can't imagine buying one.

Madlentileater · 05/09/2008 13:23

have waterstones got them then?
(shall I brave the rain to have a look?)

Ledodgy · 05/09/2008 13:26

Yes you are right niecie it is comparable to the record player and the CD player not mp3 player.

ahundredtimes · 05/09/2008 13:29

But I think the sony readers reproduce the page of a book don't they? So I don't think that will help. What I meant was that when he was reading off his console, he'd have seen less text then.

I'm guessing, btw.

Madlentileater · 05/09/2008 14:05

that's wht I'm wondering- will it be just lie a picture of the page?

fishnet · 09/09/2008 18:20

Excited. DH picked up my Reader at lunchtime. He's on his way home with it now plus I got 100 free ebooks!

I might be gone a while..........

Fishnet, I was just thinking of asking for one for christmas and thought I'd do a MN search and up popped this thread. I presume you've had a few days to 'play' with it, tell, tell, tell. I need to know what it's like.

Bobbiewickham · 12/09/2008 10:47

Please don't buy one!

Only joking - we see so many people in our shop who have an emotional connection to the printed page. A book is perfect design, and reading is a tactile experience as well as an intellectual one.

I am a real gadget queen, but I don't see the point of this - is it like an ipod for books? If so, surely it's only any good if you intend to read the books you download over and over again?

Bobbiewickham · 12/09/2008 10:48

Great for the visually impaired though. The lack of large print books is shocking.

Cappuccino · 12/09/2008 10:49

I love books too but I don't think not buying one is just about that

they are a bit of a con tbh

dh has an e-reader in his i-phone, plus lots of other little gizmos and gadgets

why would you pay £200 for the reader alone?

Cappuccino · 12/09/2008 10:50

yes Bobbie speaks the truth

none at all for school age really either

unless you fancy Agatha Christie you are fucked when it comes to large print

Bobbiewickham · 12/09/2008 10:51

Those and cowboy books

I'm sure my 8 year old ds will grow to love Louis Lamour

CatMandu · 12/09/2008 12:43

That's not true, I had a quick look earlier on the waterstones website and saw a Jeremy Strong book.

bettybeetroot · 12/09/2008 17:38

I am going to get an ebook for dh. We both read a lot and love actual books but as dh works abroad this will be great for reducing the weight of his luggage (especially as he flies frequently on helicopters). At present he go's away for about 6 weeks and usually reads at least 2 books a week so one ebook will be great! I hope!
