As a general rule, would you say it's better to get bottom of the range John Lewis stuff or mid-top of the range Argos stuff?

A couple of men once tried to refuse to take an item of furniture upstairs for me as well, so I refused to sign the delivery paper. "Take it back" I said, "It's no use to me if it's here, I'll never be able to take it up myself."

So they took it upstairs.

LB. Wish I'd thought of that!!!

hippipotami · 10/08/2008 09:59

Jarm, if you did not replace furniture every two years you could afford nicer adn more expensive items, also you'd be contributing less to landfill

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 10/08/2008 10:20

DH once bought me theseThey came in a wooden case He paid £50 for them. I then saw the exact same boules, minus the case in a local shop for £9.99. I bought them and checked them and weighed them and there was no difference. I went back to JL and after much arguing they finally admitted that they were not exclusive to JL and that £40 for a wooden case was a rip off. They gave me £25 back.

So a win, but it left a sour taste.

JARM

New furniture every three years.

Argos may be cheaper, but have NEVER had good service from there. Their delivery service is terrible, if they bother to deliver at all.

We ordered a sideboard 2 weeks before the summer holidays so dh would be home when they delivered. It was in stock when we orderd it and they took our money. It didn't arrive, and we were told it was out of stock. We then had teh same scenario over the following 8 weeks until I said enough, give me my moey back. Which they did, minus the delivery charge!!! They didn't ever deliver the bloody thing! Cheeky buggers.

I got it back though.

Sorry, rant over. Avoid Argos delivery.

I have never bought furniture from either Argos or JL tbh. I would avoid Argos stuff anyway and didn't have a John Lewis near enough to us to see what the stuff was like first hand.

Have used JL for lots of other things (things we didn't need to see ourselves) and the service has always been good.

What type of furniture are you after?

CouldYouWouldYouWithaGoat · 10/08/2008 10:43

ikea duvets are good! jl duvets are really pricey.

DaisySteiner · 10/08/2008 10:46

Funnily enough Derelicte we are having exactly the same dilemma over a new duvet! I bought some of JL's 'cheap' bedding recently and it was crap frankly and got sent back. On that basis I'm probably goign to go for an Argos duvet that's higher up in their range.

SlartyBartFast · 10/08/2008 11:00

i heart john lewis, didnt realise they were online.

i hate argos with a vengeance.

DanJARMouse · 10/08/2008 12:59

only things like bookcases, tv units, coffee table - we dont have warbrobes (all built in) so it doesnt really cost that much.

My bookcases I have at the moment are £9.99 each in argos at the moment.

I alos love bootsales, have just furnished my living room - TV unit, Tall Bookcase/Unit and 4 drawer chest for £18.

I have 3 kids under 5yrs and things get wrecked easily, whats the point in paying a fortune?

But I do get bored, and I cant warrant paying hundreds of pounds on things that I wont like in a few years time.

DanJARMouse · 10/08/2008 13:00

oh, and i never throw things away - bootsales or freecycle.

im not a complete throwaway, as many people on here know.
