Projector and sceen instead of TV?

Has anyone opted for using a projector and a screen /or even just using a white wall?

If so, how happy are you, which are the drawbacks?

Also, what things are important when choosing a projector and screen?

of course good manners dictate that one turn the telly off when one has visitors. i always did. its amazing how many relatives pop in and ask to put it on for the footie - the boys retire after dinner for the motor racing (snore) the girls ask for the soaps. talk about the soaps (larger bore)

I'm becoming sadder by the second, I know, but:
it's brilliant for Wii games and Wii Fit.

we want to get a Wii...and I thought it will make it really cool to have it over a projector

screen arrived...but think it is the big 2m screen ....I enquired if it was possible to get a slightly smaller one (1.80m)....hohum...looks like we will have to rearrange furniture, to free the big wall...I suppose at least then it will be straightaway at it's end destination....

Hehehe. Well, not sure if you'd like something like that, but what we've done is to have proper (as in good looking) bookshelves built in against the whole wall. So when the screen is not down, you see the shelves and books, so still a nice look for the room. This way you don't waste any room space at all.

That also gives you somewhere to put one of the surround sound speakers.

That sounds like a fab idea...will suggest it to dh

Projectors are for conferences imo.

3andnomore · 09/09/2008 12:19

lol....everyone to their own, heh

But I can't wait
Funny enough, most people have like 42" tv's...so, the Projector won't be much different to that (realistically with the size of our room)....we are just not keen to have such a monstrum in our room...and a projectorscreen is not always there...

(However, as an aside...it will be quite good really, because if I do have a presentation to prepare for University, I will be able to have a proper testrun at home )

DS telss his friends we have a 128" telly

3andnomore · 10/09/2008 18:53

The replacement bulbs are less than half price atm, you might want to buy a spare... (says she who's never owned one, but I remember how grumpy my brother got when the bulb blew and he had to wait for a replacement)

roisin · 10/09/2008 19:16

Dh has a projector for work, and we have a bit white wall in the playroom. Every now and again we will have a 'cinema night' and the boys invite some mates round and have popcorn and watch a movie.

But I wouldn't want something that big in the living room. We just have one TV in the lounge. I think it's regular/average sized, but it's about the smallest non-portable TV you can get these days

3andnomore · 10/09/2008 19:44

mary...replacement bulb was included in the package deal...but apparently this projectors bulb have up to 10000 hours in them, unlike most others...if that is the truth is another story, lol!

roisin, our old tv, which is possibly 20 years old, for all I know (got it from freecycle| is average size, pre-widescreen etc...and is lovely in size...around 30" I think....but it starts faffung about etc. funny noises, not always turning on....and we would need to get a new TV anyway...but well...might aswell get a projector instead....iykwim

3andnomore - have you tried it out yet?

FairLadyRantALot · 22/09/2008 21:16

well, dh finally gotten round to set it up....and we like it so far.....

it's ms 6th Birhday soon, and I know he really wants a party....might be having a nice inexpensive Home Cinema Party with typical Cinema Snacks etc....or does that sound like a real stupid idea?
