NCT Nearly New Sale Sellers: £30 for a table, is this too much?

My local NCT has changed the way it charges sellers - used to be 30% of proceeds went to the NCT but now they're charging £30 a table. This sounds quite high to me and just wondered what other branches charge?

I think that is very high, but then im shocked at 30% of all takings.

I dont know how the NCT works though.

onceinalifetime · 06/08/2008 13:55

I think I'd need to sell at least £60 of stuff to make it worth it really as there's a lot of preparation in pricing things up. Not sure it can be done just selling clothes.

Any other sellers about? I'm keen on feedback as this is the first time they've starting charging per table and I'd like to suggest a lower amount if that ties in with other NCT sales.

i dont know about NCT sales as we dont have them in my area,
but car boot sales are only £5-£8 a table, i know where i would go to sell my stuff!!

TheBlonde · 06/08/2008 15:46

Our NCT has just changed to table top selling - irrc it's £30
Seems a rip off to me

LackaDAISYcal · 06/08/2008 15:50

I think £30 a table will work out a lot less than the 30% of your sales, even if it does seem higher than car boot sales etc but I suppose it depends what you're selling; if you have big items like prams/cribs etc then £30 isn't bad, but if it's just little things like clothes then as you say you would have to make a lot to make it worth your while. For little sales I would've thought that £15 would be more realistic. Maybe you could suggest different rates for different sized pitches?

I'm pretty sure ours is still charging 30% of the proceeds, which has always put me off using them, charity or not!

rookiemater · 06/08/2008 15:50

That is a lot of money. I put loads of stuff in a sale once and only made about £20.00. Plus it will be confusing for buyers, its nice to have clothes arranged by age group and toys at one end, if its done in tables then it will be even more of a bun fight than these things are normally.

cthea · 06/08/2008 15:58

Our local branch charges £20 a table. I've been to one NNS and it seemed to work well even if there was a mix & match of items on each table. I think compared with a car-boot sale that you get more people interested in baby stuff and in far less time. I never sold, though, so I don't know how much profit you can expect to make.

mistlethrush · 06/08/2008 16:04

Ours is done so that its all sorted out so that buyers can go to one place for clothes (by age and sex), toys (sort of sorted by age) equipment, bedding etc. 30% of sales does go to NCT - but you can sell a small amount or large amount and its easier for buyers so probably a lot more gets sold overall. No limit on numbers of items except only 30 items of clothing... Have sold at last 2 quite sucessfully, although haven't sold many large things yet.

onceinalifetime · 06/08/2008 16:46

Ours used to be sorted by age and I think that was much better for buyers and sellers - took a lot of organising but much easier to find what you need.

The £30 is for a table but does not cover any large items of equipment. That has to be sold separately at 30% to NCT.

TheBlonde · 06/08/2008 16:46

once - are you in SW London by any chance?

onceinalifetime · 06/08/2008 16:50

TheBlonde, exactly what I was wondering about you! Not quite where I live but that's my local one. I was wondering what the general consensus was as I think it's too high.

OP posts:
TheBlonde · 06/08/2008 17:00

I heard that previously it was difficult to get to sell

For the £30 you also have to do your own selling don't you?

onceinalifetime · 06/08/2008 17:08

Yes, you do the selling now. Previously long waiting list for sellers, about a year or so. That may obviously change with new format.

OP posts:
TheBlonde · 06/08/2008 17:15

For £30 you can stick 30 ads on nappyvalley.co.uk and you don't have to sweat it out in a church hall

Seems silly that the equipment is still separate as I'd have thought that would be what people would most likely want to haggle over

poshtottie · 06/08/2008 18:19

I had a table at one of their sales recently, it was £12. We're in Dorset.

MingMingtheWonderPet · 06/08/2008 18:23

We are in Kent and the local NCT sale charges £10 a table.
Always sell all the tables very quickly so I guess they could charge more, but they don't.

Made about £120 at the last one that I did. Sold mostly baby stuff (reuseable nappies, bumbo, steriliser etc)

Am doing another one in November to sell more 'toddler' type stuff

littlerach · 06/08/2008 18:25

I'm in Wilts and they charge £10-£15 here.

But I've made more doing a table top than the traditional one.

Housemum · 09/08/2008 19:49

£30 seems high - our average take-home amount is around £50/£60 - we charge £5 - £10 for table top sales as they are generally less popular. Do you know anyone who has sold before? Guess all you can do is work out whether or not you will sell enough to make it worthwhile - you'd need to sell £100 of items under £10 at our sale to make it the same (30% commission is on items under £10). We take 15% for items over £10.
