Talk to me about cookers!

When we bought our house it came with a Carron Cordon Bleu 5 de Luxe cooker (double oven, 4xhob, griddle, eye-level grill) which is wonderful except it is no longer working properly, is probably unsafe (!) and can't be fixed as it's over 20 years old. So, my mum has said she'll get us a new cooker - even suggested an aga! She's got a fair amount of dosh sloshing around as she lives with us and has few expenses.

I'd love something like the Carron we've got or an aga. Anyone got any suggestions/advice/experience with any of these things?

DH doesn't want an aga so that's out. All the range type cookers I've seen don't have high grills. The space to fill is almost twice the normal cooker width. I've never bought a new cooker before and have no idea what are good makes, or how much they cost. I would google it but-

My internet connection is behaving very oddly and is taking over 5 mins to download even a page from mn, and it's not getting very far with anything more complicated; so when I finally get the Google search results and click a link, after about 5 mins I am looking at a completely blank page with 'Done' on the bar at the bottom. It's driving me mad.

I haven't seen anything like that in current ranges. We have a rangemaster with a low grill, TBH it is not a very good grill.

How wide is the gap you have to fill? Modern cookers come in 10cm multiples. If it is that old it might be 42" which is a bit awkward.

Also don't cound on the fact you can't fix it- have you actually tried a cooker specialist? Where are you, I remember a shop in south London that specialised in vintage cookers.

A new cooker of that quality would probably cost so much that you might as well rebuild the kitchen too. Can you get creative with putting in an extra cupboard to fill the space and getting a good 60cm cooker?

Cannon is a good make IMO, Rangemaster, Stoves, Neff, Falcon.

We've talked to quite a few Corgi reg people round here (east Devon) and they all shake their heads - you know the way they do can't get the parts guv - which is why we're looking at getting something new. I'll have a trawl around on google and e-bay (I always forget about e-bay) when we're back from camping and if Virgin have decided to stop restricting our bandwidth so that I can actually look at pictures of cookers...

The width is bang on 3ft which I think is 91.4cm. Not helpful if I need to think in 10s!

Oh you will be fine, you can get lots of lovely range cookers in 90cm eg. here

Oh those are nice. DH will have to cope without his eye-level grill - I haven't seen one at all anywhere. Thanks for your help.

Are you sure you need to replace it?
Have you googled and checked to see if there are stockist of parts, as well as specialist repair places?
If it is a decent cooker (which is sounds like) then its quite possible you could get parts and find someone good to fix it, you just prob need to find an expert rather than a local bod.
