Was thinking an academic diary, but all I have found a v dull red or black ones and she has a stationary fetish (family trait) so that will not do!
Any ideas?

Ooooh good a stationery oporn thread

You must go to Paperchase

This is quite a nice diary

I wouldn't get a diary - I have always been given one by the school! although they are boring I have always decorated them with foam letters (can get in hobby craft!)

def the laminator and paper trimmer - really good when making resources at home so can get them finished at home ready to put up at school! Although I would certainly invest in good quality ones and up to A3!!! As display stuff etc will be bigger than A4

Cheap to run colour printer and coloured paper (amazing how much of your own stuff you use to start with!)

stickers and stampers are great - look at the superstickers website!

lots of frozen meals for the 1st term - she will be shattered and not fancy cooking!

Some of those pens that run out! then can rub out any comments in books that you changed your mind about or where you have written the wrong childs name!! (very easy done when you are tired!)

Does she know what year group she will be teaching as that will make a big difference!

i.e. if foundation of KS1 then will want a teddy (to use for circle time, to go home with a diary for children to write in etc!)

Wish her good luck! and whatever happens in the first few weeks tell her it really will get easier!

fairibell · 14/07/2008 10:52

ooo and forgot to say - someone to help with the laminating/cutting etc to make resources for displays!! this really is invaluble as it can take ages!

tigana · 14/07/2008 10:56

Am baaaad big sister...I don't even know what year group she will have! . Will find out and will joyfully meander through stationary/craft supplies section of The Range later.
Thanks all! HAve been inspired.

Schools normally provide diaries, laminators etc.

For personal use I would suggest -

  • lots and lots of lovely gel pens (good to use to encourage reluctant "punctuaters" to whack the full stops into sentences in a different colour)
  • stickers galore, for bribery/rewards
  • scissors that cut zig zags - just because they're fun!
  • a mug, a jar of "nice" instant coffee, some fruit or herb tea bags, a jar of instant hot chocolate, a packet or two of biscuits, one of those insulated mugs with a lid (health and safety you know!)
  • memory stick is v good idea
  • handcream to keep in her desk drawer; maybe rescue remedy or aspirin too!
  • stamps with smiley faces, well done etc

She may not be given a planner by the school - we aren't, all our planning is done on the school intranet and we never print out hard copies. We get given a diary - but I like my planner because it has space for everything including parents' evening notes, groups etc.

Find out where she is going to be teaching - if she is doing 'Effective Marking' then she will have to mark in red, but as others have said many schools mark in green.

I like pretty magazine folders for storing resources, ditto files, a decent bag - comfortable enough to carry a class set of books on public transport but still nice to look at, a subscription to a teaching magazine here or here, and gin.

FabioUnblogged · 15/07/2008 07:42

omg

With this shopping list how will Tigana's sister afford to start work? She will lay out her entire first year's salary on stickers, laminators and green biros.

I am NOT going to look at the Paperchase link. Oh no. Not at all. As if. Uh uh. No no no no no.....

Love superstickers website - you can get stampers that you can personalise 'Miss Tigana thinks you're great!' kind of thing.

I taught year 4 and the following books were falling apart on my by the time I left - 'Please Mrs Butler' and 'Heard it in the Playground'. Both poetry books by Alan Ahlberg, great if you have 10 mins free at the end of the day.
