First time mum - can you use the bassinet bit of a travel system as a travel cot?

Apols if this is a daft question but...
I've got a Micralite toro and a friend is lending me the bassinet bit for newborns. Can I use that as a travel cot at the beginning? I seem to remember the sales people saying that the micralite base for the bassinet is better quality than most ie has a foam base rather than just fabric and padding so would serve as a mattress.

Also is it ok to let newborns sleep in them in the house if they fall asleep in it? Just want to know the dos and don'ts re: SIDS and safety etc.

BTW if this is all in the instructions booklet with the Toro - I'm only 26 weeks and too scared to start opening boxes yet

I think its fine to let them nap if they've fallen asleep, but wouldn't use it as a cot.

thanks - can I ask why not as a cot?

Iwouldn't use it for a cot if it is being used as part of the pushchair when you're out as it'll have fumes from cars etc on it, IYSWIM

If bassinett means the part like the proper pram section of a traditional style pram that comes off the chassis, (i dont know the buggy you are referring to) then I would say it's fine.
Both my kids slept in the pram top of an M&P ultima section until they were too big, next to my bed, and no.3 will do the same, then go into a cot.

Hope that's not bad!! lol

ok thanks. Think I'm referring to the carrycot bit of the travel system. God, when did these things get so complicated!

carrycot - thats the one, couldnt think of it. Yeah, mine slept in that while they were tiny and liked to be swaddled tight.

I would think it would be fine as a travel cot. Unless of course you're going travelling for 6 months. My youngest slept in a drawer when I visited someone once. It was only for a couple of nights an she seemed perfecly happy.

kookiegoddess · 03/07/2008 16:29

yes my mum was a fan of the drawer too. she was on her own and used to sit me in one and play with spoons when she was cooking

sounds as if it would be ok for one offs then.

we used our carry cot as moses basket for first three months as we have no space in our room for the cot. it was a peg perego (mamas and papas one) and we bought a john lewis moses basket mattress which fit inside it perfectly
