Buy a velvetiser? Or an alternative?

I really fancy a velvetiser as I love hot chocolate. Is it worth it? Do you have to use Hotel Chocolat bits in it?

What should I go for instead of a velvetiser?

Or just stick with hot milk in a pot and a decent hot chocoate (and Bailey's)?

We have one and use hot chocolate powder or grated chocolate.
Also instant coffee to make milky coffees

Ours does cold too, so also makes milkshakes nicely

CrikeyMajikey · 02/11/2026 21:02

We’ve had one for a few years and the DC love it. We use Whittards chocolate in it, they do some great flavours. We also use it for lattes, etc but it doesn’t do cold drinks. May be the newer ones do? We bought it as a family xmas gift during the covid Christmas, it’s a great pressie.

@Thisusernameisalwaysavailable @CrikeyMajikey how much worktop space does it take up?

The velvetister will give the smoothy texture. The type of chocolate you use will give you the taste.

tonsattingforbjudes · 02/11/2026 21:05

I'll be a dissenting voice. Friends have a velvetiser and they complain (and I concur) that the hot chocolate simply doesn't come out hot enough. Instead, I bought one of these.
Cheap and cheerful, but it works for us.

It’s slightly smaller than a kettle

Thisusernameisalwaysavailable · 02/11/2026 21:07

It's not supposed to be boiling hot, same as coffee shouldn't be scalding hot.

Mine definitely comes out hot enough.

Kedwic · 02/11/2026 21:10

I got one and I have to say I wasn't a fan I prefer to do my hot chocolate in a pan on the hob and use a little eclectic whisk that cost £3 to make it all creamy. I do love the Hotel Chocolat hot choc and knoops hot choc flakes but I gave my velvetiser away!

The new one does cold drinks 😊

Thisusernameisalwaysavailable · 02/11/2026 21:10

Dd6 uses it independently to make babycino hot chocolate and milkshakes. It's so easy.

FluffyCat17 · 02/11/2026 21:15

I like mine precisely because it comes out ready to drink instead of being too hot for my (probably over sensitive) mouth. The sachets aren’t cheap but there’s nothing to stop you using other brands.

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 02/11/2026 21:17

So you have to use the little sachets? Or can you just put in any hot choc powder or grated chocolate?

The new one (with the better handle) does cold chocolate and Hotel Chocolat do packs for it. Love mine, got it on fb marketplace a couple of months after Christmas as it was an unwanted gift. Seller preferred coffee. I have to hide mine at the back of the cupboard or I’d have a hot chocolate every day!

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 02/11/2026 21:18

I'm really on the hunt for a really excellent hot chocolate. It's probably my method but after being in Pittenween for the art festival and drinking my body weight in hot choc from the little shop I came home with a bag of the gratings but even following the instructions to the letter I couldn't make it the same.

So obviously I need a gadget to do it for me.

We’ve just replaced our original one which had been very well used and was not working properly any more (bought when they first came out) with the newer model that does hot and cold. It is properly hot compared to the old model and so smooth and creamy, easier than standing over the hob with a pan and hand whisk and creamier too.

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 02/11/2026 21:20

@Ineedanaptoo also, nothing wrong with a hot choc every day! I promised myself I'd only have a hot choc with Bailey's at the weekend and I've just finished one off there....so long as I'm not doing it before work I reckon it's grand.

Out anything in it.

We use anything from the little options sachets, to grating our own chocolate 🍫 🍫

Nah, just look on vinted. There'll be a fair few.

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 02/11/2026 21:22

Are the cheaper knock off ones just as good though?

£35 in Dunelm
£50 in Lakeland

Or a £3 whizzy whisk......

Love ours. It's my weekly treat after swimming.

Chumpingtonquinces · 02/11/2026 21:27

DD has one and uses daily. You can use normal cocoa and sugar or hot chocolate powder or flakes. It doesn’t take up much room on counter (less than kettle) recommend.

Greenpeanutsnail · 02/11/2026 21:27

I agree with the hot chocolate shaker. It makes the hot chocolate lovely a smooth with a bit of froth on it. I was debating a velvestiser, but I’m very glad I went for a shaker instead.

blibblibs · 02/11/2026 21:29

I love mine, it's one of those kitchen appliances I would definitely replace if I needed too.
Much better than a whizzy stick and you can put any chocolate in you want. Whittards powder is my favourite.

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 02/11/2026 21:36

@tonsattingforbjudes @Greenpeanutsnail do you heat the milk elsewhere then put it in the container with the chocolate?
