Switching to Aldi from Tesco - UPDATE!

Thank you to everyone who let me know their Aldi experiences about a month ago - I appreciate every over of you!

Here's the update!
We love it!

First off - it's averaging at ~£35 cheaper a shop - which is pretty huge! (For reference we are 2 adults, 2 secondary school kids. Were paying around £180 a week on Tesco).

We were prepared for a quality drop as we were paying less. We absolutely did not get a quality drop. More often the quality and taste was better. The meat eaters have reported back that the meat is WAY better. The vegetarian items from the freezer section are also some of the best I've had. The yogurts and ice cream were way better (I was concerned about these). So far toiletry wise we've tried the shower gel and 'fake' sure deodorant - both great.

We love how many of the items are British.

We seem to have lucked out with one where the fruit and veg lasts - phew!

There's literally a few items which we wouldn't get again, none of which are a big deal. So great news!

Absolutely loving spotting the dupes, my oldest comes with me and he finds them hilarious.

The checkout is becoming less stressful - haha!

I would fully recommend to anyone to make the swap.

(Oh yeah, and you get to treat yourself to the bakery as a reward, hello pistachio croissant!)

Thanks everyone!!!!

I love Aldi and Lidl for the reduced range alone, I don’t need 12 types of mustard or cheese hidden in 4 different places (looking at you Morrisons!) I can get in and out in 45 mins. Honesty I’d still shop there if it was the same price as Sainsbos

We’ve stopped buying fresh fruit from Aldi because it’s rotten within 2 days - or sometimes less! Store cupboard basics seem to be very hit and miss in terms of availability, that’s something that’s been happening over the past few months, some kind of supply issues? I’m trying hard to keep Aldi for our main weekly shop but I’m having to go to other supermarkets more and more often.

I shop mainly in Aldi and I have to admit that the fresh fruit and veg being rotten is the main issue for me. The problem is that I can't be bothered to go somewhere else to buy it.

DH does the cooking in our house and he's always moaning about it. He acts surprised if it isn't rotten when I bring it home. Sometimes it is definitely on the way.

No, the crisps and cereal aren't good.

My main shop is Ocado although I am partial to Lidl as well

Don’t know if this wil help anyone but I did a just eat shop on Monday purely of half price Waitrose fruit and veg and have used it al and found it to be far better quality than aldi and affordable when it’s reduced ! It’s called “fresh Monday “ or something. Not sure if it’s just on certain areas but I found the quality markedly higher than Aldi but get most other stuff there

Same! I once watched a guide dog lick every item along the bottom row, obviously the owner could not see what his dog was up to, but I put me right off.

That is grim! Yuk!

I seem to spend the same no matter where i shop online or in stores.

Do other supermarkets not also have heavily processed food stuff then? What a weird comment!

op I tried their tiles crisps (squares) this week and think they're actually better than squares.

Edited

Of course they do. However I find my sainsburys have a lot more options when it comes to fresh food. Just my experience.

Agreed I only need one type of hot mustard, but according to their website Aldi doesn't sell parmesan cheese or ground corriander, both of which I use regularly (possibly not at the same time), a few weeks ago they didn't stock dried mixed fruit or glace cherries - used every week in my house, and they still don't have mixed spice. The extra mileage and hassle negates any possible savings.

How funny, I went into an Aldi earlier to get a loaf of bread as I was walking past and I caught myself thinking “do people really manage to do a full weeks shop in here ?” I really don’t like Aldi

Really? I do a full food shop there every week and I cook mostly from scratch

I’ve just made cheese and herb bread rolls today for sandwiches with peppered ham, extra mature cheddar and tomato and chilli chutney
am making a minced beef and onion pie with Maris piper mash and veg plus a tomato and roasted garlic soup

the only things I go elsewhere for are
gherkins (specific addiction!)
ham stock
lesser used spices like sumac
red wine stock pots and oxo cubes (depending what Aldi have in)
marmite XO

No to Aldi. Their packed fresh veg has always rotten bits in it. As for the meat? You pay a lot for that added water. Basics such as pasta or tinned foods aren't cheaper than other supermarkets.

Note in my case, butcher more expensive better meat

I love Lidl and my bill is cheaper precisely because their range is quite small, there are less things to be tempted by, I usually cook from scratch and we are just 2 adults at home now, if Lidl doesn’t sell it we aren’t having it! Some weeks my bill is under £50 and I am not scrimping and their loyalty card is great.
