Receiving online shopping

I'm wondering if anyone has this problem with receiving their online food shops, obviously it doesn't come in carrier bags anymore it comes in crates so I take a few bags to the door to fill up but as the crate is always on the floor I end up having to sit on the floor with it as I have a bad back which leaves the delivery driver towering over me and I always feel a little uncomfortable, any ideas ?

Yes!
I sit on the floor by the door, with my plastic storage boxes, load them up and then I can slide them - without lifting them - into the kitchen and put the food away? It’s the best & only solution I’ve found since they stopped sending it bagged.

Im really narked that they won’t let you buy bags as you check out cos it’s made the process a pain in the arse. The whole idea of the home shopping was to make life a bit easier for people who found the instore shopping too much for them.
It’s just moved the issue from the checkout and and packing in store, to our front door. Grrrr😡

exhausted100 · 23/10/2026 12:12

Can you just take the crate into the kitchen? That’s what we do. Drivers are more than willing to bring through to kitchen if that’s what’s required

yeesh · 23/10/2026 12:22

Ocado still use bags. So much easier than the crates. They also take the bags back for recycling

That's exactly what I do. Driver will bring them through and put them on the worktop or table and I just unload on to worktop or table, stack the crates together and hand them back. Then put away into cupboards at my leisure.

MrsJonBonJovi · 23/10/2026 13:10

Morrisons still use bags so I tend to order from there mostly. If I order from anywhere else, I pull a wheelie bin in front of the door and ask the driver to put the crates on top one at a time whilst I empty them. I have a dodgy back and cannot bend and lift easily, so much easier this way. When I do the occasional Iceland shop to fill up my chest freezer, I decant it all into a festival trolley and just drag it through the garden to the shed!

mamaof4losingmymind · 23/10/2026 13:15

I use a wash basket and just chuck everything in that

RedThroatedWarbler · 23/10/2026 13:17

I carry the crates to the kitchen. When i was on crutches, they did it for me. And always offer.

TemperanceWest · 23/10/2026 13:17

I have a kitchen stool that I put out for them to put the crates on. No bending for either of us!

LampLightz · 23/10/2026 13:19

Yes, I get grocery shopping every week for a family of four and my back is knackered by the end of it.

I might start taking a few of the lighter crates to the kitchen but I'm afraid I'd probably run out of counter space, as my kitchen is tiny.

GoodbyePat · 23/10/2026 13:19

This is actually one of the reasons I don’t bother ordering from Waitrose.

As others have said - Ocado still use bags, which the driver will take out of their crates and hand to you at your doorstep. Or if you prefer, they can carry the bags into your home.

(Why stick to a delivery service that doesn’t suit you?)

wandererofthekingdom · 23/10/2026 13:24

One of the reasons I stick with Ocado, their customer service is excellent.

chattyness · 23/10/2026 13:24

We have a patio table that we place by our gate and the crates get stacked on that and we carry them to the kitchen. Our delivery driver will only put one on there at a time and it makes things a lot easier for us and him as none of us are have to bend.

Ohhelpwhatnow · 23/10/2026 13:25

I feel your pain. My solutions:
A chair in the porch and asking the deliverer to put the crate on it.
Unloading non perishables into your shopping trolley and unpacking it a bit at a time.
Perishables into a large carrier bag balanced on another chair, unload straight into fridge.
Buy a midweek delivery card and have smaller deliveries twice a week.

BasilParsley · 23/10/2026 13:27

As I have mobility issues, I get the drivers to pack the stuff into bags for me in the porch which I can then leisurely carry through to the kitchen over the next couple of hours.

Arlanymor · 23/10/2026 13:31

I use Ocado so as others have said, they still use bags. My mum can't get Ocado where she is, so she uses Tesco. Her delivery drivers are very happy to pop the crates on the worktop in the kitchen and she just unpacks them all then and there and puts away at her leisure later. Edited to add that during Covid she had big 'bags for life' near the door and just decanted into them. But it's much better now to have them taken through the kitchen as she has arthritis.

SugarOh · 23/10/2026 13:31

i have teenage sons so they help me lift them, and i just chuck it all on to the hallway floor, i do hate how there is no bags anymore as having to then carry £200 worth of shopping through is annoying. i wouldnt sit on the floor in front of them that sounds rather awkward!

StrongerFitter · 23/10/2026 13:33

I take crate to kitchen table and empty it out there. Don’t think bags would help much

Gladtimeslady · 23/10/2026 13:35

As others have said, Ocado use bags and happily carry them in to the kitchen for me. My daughter also uses Ocado and the drivers carry them up 4 flights of stairs to her flat without complaint.

My Waitrose delivery guys always unload the crates into my bags on the doorstep. I then carry them through

Sammzz · 23/10/2026 15:36

Thanks for all your responses but I don't think I stated exactly what my issue was properly, I could ask the delivery drivers to bring them through but to be honest with you I'm a single woman and don't really want men that I don't know walking through my house, I do bring an IKEA bag to the door and fill that up my issue isn't really getting the shopping from A to b it's more the fact that the crate goes on the floor and because I can't bend I have to sit on the floor and empty it, I was more wondering how to keep the crate at a height that's manageable for me, somebody did make a suggestion of a chair or small table but getting this to the door each time is a bit of a ball ache so it was just wondering what other people do really

I “stick” with either Asda or Tesco deliveries as there is nothing else that delivers around here, and certainly not Ocado!
I couldnt really have the delivery guys carrying crates through to the kitchen as i would have to put the Ddog away - but where? The living room and kitchen are linked so where would she go?

It was so much easier with bags.

Surely it would only once a week to move a small lightweight table or stool nearer to the door. It makes the rest of the shop easier, surely that's worth it. I know you have back issues so do I , moving a light table or stool a few feet is so worth it I promise you , or maybe you could ask the driver to do it as it will save him bending too? My husband used to move the table for us but now he has health issues and can't do it so it's down to me with my bad back and knees 😆

OddBoots · 23/10/2026 18:07

I have a couple of these tables and a couple of these bags. I put the tables in the hall, one for the crate and one for a bag then I just transfer at a comfortable height.

For relatively small deliveries, I have a decorative planter on my porch with a flat top. The 1960s style that you would put a potted plant on. It is the perfect surface for holding a crate, most boxes, or a food delivery bag.

Laiste · 23/10/2026 18:10

Some of the drivers stand at the lorry and pack as much as they can into each crate so they weigh a fecking ton!

I prefer it in more crates (they use a sack barrow) so it's easier to lift in. I put a cloth in the table and unpack it all there.
