DS is driving me potty keep pushing his feet against the table in his Tripp Trapp. Is it a phase or do we need a new highchair?

Arrrrgghhh! He continually puts his feet up against the table and pushes himself backwards. He knows not to, he does it anyway. Then he whinges because he can no longer reach his dinner .

Is it a phase he will grow out of or a constant problem with Tripp Trapps and I need to either put up with it or get a different chair.

I was so into the 'sitting at the table with us' thing, and it was great, especially for BLW, but ARRRRGGGHHH!

DS has a Handysitt and he does the same. Has done since about your DS age and he is now 2.10, to the point where I don't put him in it any more.

i think he would have preferred a different type of highchair.

Gipfeli · 30/06/2008 15:27

Both mine did this with theirs and it was only a phase for them.

Not sure that helps you though - it may be a comment on the children more than the chair! My two like food and I think that once they worked that doing this took them further away they decided to stop.

flowerybeanbag · 30/06/2008 15:30

Oh dear.

He does seem to like having a tray when he gets one if we're out or whatever. He loves his food, but it doesn't seem to stop him, probably because he realises I will push him back to the table.

Thanks for replies. Have to go and get him up from his nap now but will be back later if there are any more.

My DS has just moved out of a high chair to a booster seat and does this a lot.

I've just started telling him to stop, and if he doesn't, I make him get down. But then he's a bit older at 22 months.

tissy · 30/06/2008 15:33

It's a phase

dd did this, and it worried me, as behind her seat is a work top, and I had visions of her pushing herself over and cracking her head against the corner.

we solved the problem by screwing a small brass eye into the underside of the kitchen table just in front of where she sits. we then tied her chair to the table, so she couldn't push herself backwards. we removed the tie when she got out of the habit, but have just checked, and the eye is still there 5 yrs later!

LittleMyDancing · 30/06/2008 15:36

DS did this on and off - I found ignoring it was the best way to get him to stop quickly. If he got told off, he just did it to wind us up - little monkey.

He's still in his tripp trapp now (27 months) and refuses to let me take off the baby bar.

Cosette · 30/06/2008 15:41

My DS did this too, so we moved the Tripp Trapp to be against the wall, so he had nowhere to go, which seems to have done the trick. Is that an option for you?

Jojay · 30/06/2008 15:42

My DS did this too, but doesn't do it any more - it was a phase for him. I used to try and sit down with him, and have a foot on the chair to stop him doing it.

Be warned though, once he was in a booster chair strapped to a normal dining chair, at a friends house, and went flying over backwards.

Coming to think of it, that was around the time he stopped doing it at home...........!!

You can get trays for Tripp Trapps from ebay (least you used to be able to). My DS1 has a Tripp Trapp (he is 28 months) and went through a brief phase like yours. He is ok now. Just got two new ones for my DTs and now DS1 wants me to put the baby strap back on his too.

BTW, anyone got an old style one and a new style one? I don't like the new ones as much, with the plastic bit that clips on the back. My old one (2 yrs old) is so much nicer .

flowerybeanbag · 30/06/2008 17:18

tissy ingenious, that's one to think about.

Cosette against the wall not an option for us, the table's in the middle of the room with ovens/cupboards on all sides.

I do sit with him most of the time, and try and keep my foot on the bottom, but can't all the time, and even when I do, he spreads his legs to get his feet up the sides.

I think ignoring him might be the best option, although I'm not completely convinced he's doing it for the attention - when I just ignore him and move his feet off rather than telling him no, it doesn't seem to make any difference.

thanks all, some options to think about, might investigate the tray on ebay as well.

yes they def do a tray for the t.t -we bought one about 3 months ago as we were having the same problem and it's been brilliant - i highly recommend!

stealthsquiggle · 30/06/2008 17:37

it's a phase - an annoying one. DD (20mths) still does it occasionally, but if she repeatedly does it after she has been told not to then I take her plate away until she is prepared to sit nicely. We also have an absolute 'no toes on the table' rule.

MuffinMclay · 30/06/2008 19:05

Phase. Quite short-lived here.

Fennel · 30/06/2008 19:10

Phase. DP bungeed the seat onto the table leg, that sorted it.

LenniEd · 30/06/2008 20:18

Phase here too. Over quickly, only does it now when she's done and ready to chuck any leftovers on the floor - wish that was a phase as well

chocolateshoes · 30/06/2008 20:22

Phase here as well and DS won't let me take bar off either and he has just turned 3. In fact yesterday I took it off without him seeing. Then lifted him 'in' as usual. When he had finished he asked to get down & I told he could do it, held his hand and showed him, and he went mad wanting it back on again!!

Washersaurus · 30/06/2008 20:27

Don't the people who sell the clic clac tray on ebay (or whatever it is called) offer a discount on MN? Can't remember their name but think they are in the small business ads.

stealthsquiggle · 30/06/2008 21:38

we took the baby bar off DD's when she first climbed in by herself at 13 months
