I'd like to get a easy to use sewing machine, not too expensive. I'll be using it for basic sewing & button holes.

Think you'll need to quantify 'not too expensive', as one person's idea of that can be quite different from the next.

good point cantsleep - prices vary so much that I don't really know what's the best amount to spend iyswim. I've seen some machines that do embrodery & are computerized but I don't need that.

My use will be making curtains and kids clothes. I need basic stitches, zigzag, button holes and zips. I'd love a machine that was easy to thread up and to do the tension.

If it helps - I've had my machine for along time & it's on its last legs. It was given to me so I've never had to choose what machine to get. I've looked around and am finding it hard to know what brand to go for. I want the best machine for my needs at the lowest price - iyswim!!

I have a Janome Excell II 5024 and I love it. It does all the things you're looking for, incl very handy blind hem feature for sewing hems in curtains. It also does button holes virtually by itself

Cost around £259
