1st bed

My DD is just about ready to come out of a cot - but we are unsure what bed to buy. I don't want a full size single bed as room too small, but should we get a child's bed with guard attached - are there any good online shops? Looked at mothercare and kiddicare but feel none the wiser

Fab thanks very much. Thats just what I wanted to hear! Is it ok with just the wooden safety guard or did your nephew have another guard too? DD seems to move around her cot a bit and worried she may fall out further down the bed. Or is it best to just let her learn? Its quite a low bed anyway isn't it. Are you going to put DD in straight away at 15 mths?

She's 17 months so will pop her in as soon as it arrives (just about to order). She is first child so so exciting to be moving on to next stage. How sad is that! Pillow on floor sounds like best idea

DD's bedroom isn't huge so we got eher a toddler bed from Motheracre, a bit like this fr £60 (mattress extra). It does have guards attached - but they are very short, but as bed is so low it didn't really matter too much anyway.

Think they do an extendable one too.

BTW, IKEA have great storage that fit under toddler beds

pipsy1 · 29/01/2005 13:53

Thanks Hulababy - thats the one I was looking at in Mothercare.
Lockets - I was going to order from White Company too. Thought I'd treat her to something special - do they do small sizes? Also - what are you using - a duvet?

IKEA do a great little bed that has folding up head and foot bit. It's called VIKARE £53 p.275 of new catalogue. You can get bed rails too that push on then when your DD grows you just fold down the foot bit then the head bit. Mattress is extra, but isn't expensive (good for night time toilet training accidents) Our DD1 is 4.9 and we are just going to let the foot bit down this afternoon!!

Haven't got ikea catalogue but will go on line. I think they all sound pretty similar, just good to hear advice of people who've used them as when Ist time mum you don't have a clue and its costly and a right pain to make mistakes

On these type beds do you use single size sheets etc or cot bed?

Another recommendation for the Ikea Vikare, ours cost around £80 including the mattresses and it's great. The bedrails are only £4 each too, and they're easily removable.

I am also interested in this as my DS is 18 months. TBH I hadn't thought about next stage bed but that Saplings one looks great. My DS uses Grobags, would you still use them in a starter bed? He's an upside down and back to front boy so I don't think a duvet would be suitable.

How did other Grobag users cope please?

bobbybob · 30/01/2005 08:41

My ds has just got the idea that cot=grobag and bed=duvet. He will move all around his cot on the nights he chooses to go in it, but stays pretty well inside the bed with no guard rail or anything. I have put his pillow hard against the wall with another pillow at 90 degrees on the outside edge. He kind of snuggles between the two and seems to know to stay there.

Hulababy · 30/01/2005 09:01

For bedding, we have a normal single bed size duvet and cover. We found that many of the cot bed size bedding was too babyish, and DD was desperate for Disney Princess So we throw a big single duvet over her bed - it does touch the floor either side nearly - but at least it hides the toys under the bed

Hulababy · 30/01/2005 09:01

Oh yes - and for bottom sheets - cot bed size.

Hulababy · 30/01/2005 09:02

CQ - we also switched to a duvet when DD went into a bed (at 18 monhts), rather than continue with the Grobags.

CelluliteQueen · 30/01/2005 12:10

Thanks for that. Sounds like a stupid question but what was your reason for switching from cot to bed? My DS is quite a big lad but there's still plenty of room in his cot.
