Combined washing machine & tumble drier....would you???

We have an extended warranty policy on the fridge and washing machine and they have both just been written off . I am yet to find out how much we have to spend, but it will be fairly middle of the road £300-£400 each, I'm guessing. I have never had a tumble drier and now is my chance, but a couple of people have said they are no good. I use cloth nappies so would be handy for an occasional dry, although I wouldn't use it often due to high costs and environmental impact yaddah yaddah.

So anyway, are they any good?

I have a tumble drier and I love it - Ive had 3 washer/driers in 5 years and they were rubbish. The drier only dries half loads on not well either. I'd not get another.

reikizen · 25/06/2008 17:07

No, in my experience the dyer is crap. You'll have the nappies in there for DAYS!

Kbear · 25/06/2008 17:07

NO THEY ARE CRAP

ItsNotOnlyTheGoodBits · 25/06/2008 17:09

No.

The problem with them is that in order to dry clothes you need to take out half of the wet washing. Because drying clothes requires more space in the drum. The drum of a tumble drier is significantly bigger than that of a washing machine. Also they don't dry very well at all.

Either stick with just a washing machine, or go for separate washing machine and tumble drier.

I have a combined washing machine adn tumble drier - I hardly ever use the drier tbh. it's pretty expensive but worth it for occasional use imo.

Haven't noticed that the efficiency of the w/m is compromised but then we bought a fairly expensive one. But it has never let us down in 8 years!

expatinscotland · 25/06/2008 17:11

NO!

They are utter shite.

We've had them in our past couple of flats and am so glad to be done with them.

Would rather have just had a washing machine with a bigger drum.

micci25 · 25/06/2008 17:13

no no no!!! never! i paid about £450 for one the dryer was rubbish it took me all night to dry sheets! it used inordinate amounts of electricity. it boke twice while it was under warrenty and then again out of warrenty and i was told it would cost £180 to fix. i got a new washer instead and stole borrowed my nans old dryer as she was looking to get a new one. i only had ot about 2 two years! was under warrenty for 18 months!

MrsSprat · 25/06/2008 17:13

I was happy with my washer/dryer until I tried separates - the dryer actually dries clothes and men's shirts to the point of not needing ironing!!

mindalina · 25/06/2008 17:13

NO DON'T DO IT

They are horrible. Get a tumble dryer, mine has improved my quality of life beyond measure - honestly

woodenchair · 25/06/2008 17:16

Another no here.

The drum is much smaller than normal because of the extra motor etc.
We had a washer/dryer/condenser machine for a while, I hated it, if the load was too big everything ended up smelling!

flowerybeanbag · 25/06/2008 17:17

Going against the overwhelming tide of opinion here, I am going to say that my Miele washer-drier is FAB, I love it.

southeastastra · 25/06/2008 17:17

with your budget you could afford a nice washer and separate dryer. combined units are a pain, take too long to dry things and hard to fix when they go wrong.

southeastastra · 25/06/2008 17:18

miele is meant to be the best one to buy, my washer blew up this morning and have been googling them.

Hulababy · 25/06/2008 17:18

If you have room go for seperates. Had a combined in my aprtment, a good quality one too, and the dryer part of it was rubbish! Seperates are far better IME.

Umlellala · 25/06/2008 17:19

We hardly use our dryer function tbh.

Seona1973 · 25/06/2008 20:00

I dont have space for seperates so have had a washer drier for years - the last one lasted 7 years and survived a trip up from England in a removal van driven by dh!! We got a new washer drier recently and hope it lasts the same amount of time. Both have had 6kg drum loads for washing and the new one has a 4kg drying load so not that small. I dont use the drier much but it is handy for towels or if I need a grobag dried quickly when ds has peed or puked on it.

spicemonster · 25/06/2008 20:01

I wouldn't if you have space. IME the dryer is rubbish.

suwoo · 25/06/2008 20:51

Thanks all for your replies whilst I was at work. The trouble is we don't have any space at all for a tumble drier otherwise I would have had one by now. I will stick with my original plan and not bother then- I've managed without one up until now. Thanks everyone
