hello

wanted to ask anyone who has a chrysler grand voyager 2002 how they find it to drive. thinking of getting a 2.5 diesel or petrol and convert to lpg? any feedback good/bad about these as family vehicle?

Other option was a Rav 4 2002. any feedback on this as family car

any good suggestions on cars suitable for 5 passengers minimum.

thank you in advance !!!!

Oopps...sorry for the capitals

WendyWeber · 24/06/2008 22:25

How does a Previa compare for price?

I would so not buy a Voyager! Previas are fab.

Alambil · 24/06/2008 22:57

They are beasts!

You'd be better off with a normal 7 seater - a Ford one; galaxy or something, what with all these new emissions charges they're going to bring in - and the fuel consumption costs?

WendyWeber · 24/06/2008 23:00

If you buy a 2001 car it would be exempt from the new charges, wouldn't it?

Get a 2001 diesel and it won't be too bad at all.

foxy1 · 25/06/2008 08:52

thank you everyone! Has anyone owned one?

Gobbledigook has a Grand Voyager (newer than 2002) and loves it, but admits it is v expensive to run (I think hers is a 3-lire petrol engine or something?) and that's only going to get worse.

And I've a feeling Thomcat used to have a Rav4 but are there small & large versions?

silverfrog · 25/06/2008 14:04

I wouldn't buy a Voyager due to crash test results.

The ford galaxy is ok space wise (as is the S-Max) but we found a flaw in the access to rear seats - not possible from the boot if you are over 5, and the rearmost seats don't take isofix seats (which we use) which meant we would have to be forever taking car seats out from the middle row to get our teenagers access in to the rear row...

we have a honda FRV - good size, 6 seater with 2 rows of 3 seats. works for us (me and dh, dsd 18, dss 16, dd1 3 and dd2 1 (still in rearfacing seat) and a large dog in the boot along with a Phil and Teds buggy.

it's a 2.2 diesel (I think) and we get about 42mpg from it, so not the most fuel efficient, but not the worst either.

The advantage the voyager has over all other 7 seaters is masses of boot space, masses of cabin space, excellent access & the back seats aren't crammed up against the boot door. Unfortunately if space is a priority there's nothing similar on market & you have to put up with the eyewatering costs of running one.

We rented a Toyota Highlander recently and it was lovely! Once I'm working again we are going to get a hybrid version (very expensive, but the fuel savings of the hybrids are great).

WowOoo · 25/06/2008 15:41

Rav 4, they are very sexy.
My mate has one , OK for one child and a dog. I love going in it and pretending it's mine after we've parked!!

WendyWeber · 25/06/2008 15:52

The Previa is the same size as the Grand Voyager - you just can't get a new one any more (but that's OK as foxy wants an old one anyway )

WendyWeber · 25/06/2008 15:57

Previa's boot space with 7 seats up

You could get an elephant in behind 5 seats!

Thomcat · 25/06/2008 20:09

WendyWeber - very well remembered, yes I do have a Rav4!

Foxy, we have 3 car seats int he back of ours, a single buggy & a double (E£) in the boot, plus the usual crap.

It's so easy to drive. I hate big cars and although this is biggish it's very manageable.

The strap line for Toyota Ravs is 'big on the outside, small inside' or similar, and it's very true.

BigBadMouse · 25/06/2008 22:43

OK...well I have a Seat Alhambra (2002 plate ).

The alhanbra, ford galaxy and VW Sharan are all the same vehicle, same chassis, same engine (apart from the Galaxy V6 which is a ford engine), the differ only in spec. You get more for your money with the Seat. We got the 2002 version because from then on they have three 3 point belts in the back middle seats IYSWIM as opposed to just a lap belt in the centre middle seat.

MPG is about 42 - you could get more I think (we ar emainly stuck on windy country lanes). Lovely to drive, very comfy. Mine currently has a tandem pushchair and a urban detour in the boot plus two huge change bags and would still take a full weekly shop with no problems. At the weekend the urban detour refused to fold down so I just chucked it (unfolded) on top of the tandem - there aren't may cars you can do that with and have 5 people on board at the same time!

Don't get an imported previa, estima or lucida - head gasket goes on nearly every one (won't bore you with why but they really do - honest!)

paolosgirl · 25/06/2008 22:51

We've just bought an Alhambra (56 plate) and I absolutely love it. Fab value for money, so much space...am seriously thinking of moving into it, I adore it so much

hertsnessex · 25/06/2008 22:58

i had a grand voyager 3yrs ago was lovely with fab electric door and boot and dvd/playstation for entertainment on long journeys etc. drove well, didnt feel like a huge bus to drive, economy wise it was awful. 15mpg average!

Psychomum5 · 25/06/2008 23:03

we have a voyager, and regret it totally, not least because of the mileage!!!

we did have a previa, but it got writte off totally in out last accident (and almost in the previous accident), and I so wish we could get another one, not least becuase I know how well they stand up to side on and head on collisions!!!

no idea on the other model you are after, but I will say NO to the voyager!

oh, ours is a v-reg plate.
