maclaren xt for new born -any experience?

ok - currently sat here overdue waiting for birth of dd1 so have too much time on my hands. but am now concerned that our choice of pushchair (lovely maclaren xt) may be a bit uncomfy for newborn. I know it is suitable and there is head restraint etc but its not erm very pram like so how comfortable is it for babies.

We have got a sling too and I know that there will probably be a lot of sofa time coming up but experiences/tips on using an XT with a new born are welcome.

PS Also know that this is early onset pfb

i would put a cosy toes liner in there to pad it out or a sheepskin liner with a headhugger like the ones in the carseat and it will be fine good luck

Carmenere · 23/06/2008 10:49

I put a sheepskin thingy into ours and it was fine for dd when she was brand new, good luck

we used an XT from new born. My advice (which probably seems obvious but I am speaking from experience) is do strap your baby in.

When DD was a few weeks old she slipped out the back when we were going down some stairs at the tube station.

She was fine if a little dusty, I was shaken.

Agree re cosey toes/ liner idea.

Not personal experience but when my friend's baby arrived she decided that it was too exposed and not really flat enough for a new born and bought a cheap 'proper' pram for the first 5 months for £30 on ebay. I think that they are not the best for tinies tbh.

TheBlonde · 23/06/2008 11:22

I used an XT for mine, worked fine
Perfectly comfy imho

ArrietyClock · 23/06/2008 11:29

I used one. It was fine. Cosy toes/something to make it more snug definetly needed. I used a shawl/little blanket and tbh it was a pain so if I ever have another I'm buying something is designed for the job and stays put! Really fancy Carmenere's sheepskin - they look seriously cosy.

If it's any help the rather nice lady in Mothercare told me that a lot of people buy some sort of pram system and are back within weeks for a buggy. You wouldn't believe how quickly your baby will want to be viewing the world rather than staring at the sky.

JoyS · 23/06/2008 11:44

I had one and didn't like it--dd was so far away from me and it is not the smoothest ride. I was so jealous of my friends with their proper prams! Have got a lovely pliko switch this time around.

However, it is a great pushchair, one of the few that really will go birth to 4yrs and it takes a lot of abuse, folds up small, great for traveling...

poppy34 · 23/06/2008 14:49

thanks - have got the cosy toes but the sheepskin thing is a good idea.

arreityclock -does help re mothercare lady advice...reason we bought this is dh quite rightly pointed out that they grow all too soon and liked the fact maclarens are light, sturdy and portable.

we used our old techno xt from three weeks for DD as our big pram was too heavy for me to get in and out of the car due to my c-section. We bought a new XLR when she was about 12 weeks old and it is much more padded and pram like then the XT as it has an apron rather than just a cosytoes. It also seems springier in the suspension than the XT.

I'd pad your XT out with a sheepskin and it will be just fine.

hope she arrives soon; that period of overdue waiting is just the pits!

misdee · 23/06/2008 14:54

the xt/xlr are fine from birth, but for me personally, not a choice.

but do buy a sheepskin liner for it. make it mroe comfty.

poppy34 · 23/06/2008 14:56

thanks daisy.. you're right re waiting.. am sure its messing with my usually infallible and excellent sense of reason and logic

I agree Misdee, they are not a comfortable buggy for newborns. Perfect after that though.

alittleteapot · 23/06/2008 20:19

i would strongly consider sticking with the sling and playing it by ear on pram/buggy front. you can go to the shops when the baby comes. we bought a pram system but i wouldn't again. the sling is so much easier and lovelier.

we borrowed bugaboo for first 4 months and had to give it back so bought a maclaren xt thinking that would do. It is good and would be fine if you don't do too much walking but personally I like to walk everyday and the wheels are small so the ride is bumpy. Another big big plus for me is having a pram that can face both ways as it's really nice to be able to see your babies face for the first few months PLUS I found it handy to be able to see when he fell asleep and woke up and whether sun in his eyes - might sound silly to others but made my life a lot easier - so I would really recommend a bugaboo (we ended up buying one second hand) despite the price and the fact they are so common, it's a smooth ride and has been great for the first 11 months so far and will hopefully do for next time.

AnyFuleKno · 23/06/2008 20:32

I have an XT and I think that it is great BUT the baby will be facing away from you. For me that would be a big disadvantage. I feel weird having dd facing away now and she is 7 months. I put her back in the travel system facing towards me recently and she was beaming all over her face, I can only assume she was happy that she could see me!

Sawyer64 · 23/06/2008 20:34

I had a Maclaren Techno Double buggy for DD2 and dd1,from Birth.I bought the Cosy toes and she laid completely flat. She looked very snug and comfortable.Best buggy I ever bought, now looking for a single one the same,as she's 20 mths now,and DD1 doesn't need a bugy now.

poppy34 · 23/06/2008 21:48

thanks all - sling idea is a good one as can see me using that much more in first few months. Might just wait and see how I get along.. although have invested in sheep skin to go wtih cosy toes.

thanks for all the tips
