Stairgate dunce - please help!

I need to get a gate for the top of the stairs, and I'm a bit confused as to how they all work. I'd ideally like a 'no trip' one, because the floor bar on my sister's gate terrifies me every time I step over it. However, the gap I need to span is 5 cm wider at the top than at the bottom. Is it possible to get a gate without a bar that can still cope with a variable span?? I was looking at the BabyDan No Trip wooden gate on the internet, but can't work out whether it would work or not. Also, are the wall-mounted ones a nightmare to screw to the wall, and would I be better off going for a pressure one after all? Any info/advice very welcome!!

The pressure mounted ones are not always that strong, ime. I feel that they can give way under strong pressure. Also, (again only ime) they ruined the paintwork anyway, so a screw one is just the same from that point of view.

I had a pressure mounted one at first and it had a trip bar, in fact the ones that I saw mostly had a trip bar.

The screw one we had did not, and it was cheaper.

We had this one

We have babydan wooden ones like this

The screw fixings allow for the gap to be different top and bottom (which it is in our very wonky old house)

Thanks! Sounds like the BabyDan gate might be the one for me.

pressure ones will all have a trip bar

we have the Babydan wooden one and I think it will allow for 50mm deviation
but it was quite tricky to fit (and DH screws things to walls as a job)

measure twice, dril once, and make sure you use the right fittings (esp rawlplugs) as it doesn't come with any.
