Would you object if Aldi staff checked your personal bag?

Are you aware that ALDI has a policy of treating cuztomers like thieves.
I was at ALDI Caterham yesterday.
The cashier checked my empty plastic bag inside even though it was very obvious that there was nothing in it.
I then complained to a manager who didn’t even apologise and said that it is their policy to treat every customer like they were thieves.
Would you object to it? I felt disrespected and humiliated. How would you feel?

I don’t get it my life isn’t that lacking I need to create drama for the sake of it
let them check or go elsewhere

people must have enough common sense to realise that the rules are coming from head office why be a twat with the staff

so I presume all these people kicking off saying they are being accused of being a thief
how do you cope at airports when they check your bags are you not outraged they’ve accused you of being a terrorist bomber

elledee412 · 23/04/2026 01:21

Apparently this is an international thing. I’m American and I avoid Aldi because I got sick of being followed around the store like I was going to steal off-brand cereal and 99¢ pasta!

RampantIvy · 23/04/2026 07:00

I don't get followed round their stores, nor do I recall having my shopping bags searched either. Maybe it is because it is obvious from my folded shopping bags they are empty? I don't take a handbag when going shopping either.

Those comparisons are not on par.

There's a huge difference between a bag check for stolen goods in a supermarket and a bag check to search for dangerous goods, with the intentions of blowing up a passenger jet and killing hundreds/thousands of people.

Airport checks is for the safety of EVERYONE.

Supermarket bag checks are for the safety of the owners profits.

And for the benefit of all the other customers, who end up collectively having to pay increased prices to compensate for the shoplifting losses.

Oh dear, I think you are the one that is wrong here.

No one can search you without permission unless it's a police officer with reasonable grounds to do so. Otherwise, they require a warrant.

No shop staff member or anyone that works there can search you if you don't want them to...

Sorry, I was referring to police officers who have stop and search powers.
The store can ask to search your bag, you can refuse and they can refuse to let you enter the store.

No it’s a direct comparison people are saying being searched your being accused the of the crime
each to there own but personally can’t abide theft so it this catches or stops one it’s good enough for me

but guess you see this as a victimless crime as a supermarket dared to make a profit

DeftGoldHedgehog · 23/04/2026 17:26

All those in favour of having your bag checked, how do you think it would go down if shop assistants were being asked to check the bag of regular prolific shoplifters? How effective do you think that would be as a measure? And if it is such a fantastic anti-shoplifting measure, why do you think all shops are not using these measures now and checking any bags customers bring with them in every shop?

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 23/04/2026 22:39

Don't really understand why you're making such a big deal of it. The Aldì I shop at does the same. I've not shoplifted so not a problem to show my empty shopping bags.

RampantIvy · 23/04/2026 22:43

Why are you so worked up about it @DeftGoldHedgehog ?

I'm not, HTH.

Awkwardone · 24/04/2026 18:59

We know the staff hate asking. So we always offer up our bags for checking before they ask. Makes for a pleasant transaction.

EatingHealthy · 21/04/2026 03:46

I wouldn't even give it a second thought. Just like I don't when my bag is checked going into a theatre, or going through security at an airport. People do steal and it costs us all money. It's not personal, it's standard policy and checking everyone stops those who do have criminal intentions.

They didn't embarrass you, you embarrassed yourself making a fuss about such a non-event.

Your bag is checked at those venues for safety, not to see if you’ve stolen something. Completely different.

beautifuldaytosavelives · 24/04/2026 20:01

Me too, OP. There’s not a chance I’d agree, if they want to look in my bag they will have to bring the police.

They would just refuse to let you enter the shop then, as is their right.

Not sure why you are so offended at the idea TBH.

And that’s fine. I did mean my handbag, as that was the tone of the OP’s opening post. I’m offended by it because I’m not a thief, and I don’t feel the need to prove I’m not. The onus is on them to prove I am. I very rarely shop at Aldi because it is a hugely depressing experience, but I do stop at one when I go to a different work location in a very nice location and I’ve never been asked for a bag check.

KalamityKat · 28/04/2026 16:50

I don't really see why people seem to think it is OK for them to look in your shopping bags but not your handbag.

Surely, if this were is the policy, shoplifters would be happily putting stuff into their handbags. Wouldn't they ?

I don't think it is OK to ask to look into any of your bags, unless you have gone through the till and they have actual reason to suspect you have stolen something.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2026 18:16

I suppose it depends how capacious your handbag is. I don't usually take a handbag when I go grocery shopping.

Well, at least somebody agrees with me that there are better ways of managing customer services at supermarket.
If they want to catch thieves and retain customer services, cctv monitoring is the way. They have it at bloody aldi too, they just prefer to harass the decent customers instead. Unfortunately, I now understand why it happens. Not because of shoplifting but because people don’t mind being treated like sh’t. Consequently, Aldi and Ryanair is the future you people deserve. Sorry, this is not my future, I’d rather have less but quality customer care. Please keep your Stansted, Aldi and Ryanair.

'You people', eh? Getting what we deserve. As someone who is a lesser being and has bigger things to worry about, I suggest you get on that high horse of yours and gallop off.
