Advice regarding damaged wedding ring

Hi all, after some advice please. My DH and I bought a new wedding ring in October to celebrate 20 years of marriage. Its Platinum, but after a few months of wearing it, it has what looks like a deep scratch on it and the colour seems a bit faded. I’m really careful with it (take it off in the shower, washing up etc) so quite gutted as it took a while to find one and was quite a bit of money for us (2.5k so not a huge amount). I’m taking it back to the shop tomorrow but not sure what to expect when i get there. Would you be asking for repairs / replacement over concerns about the quality of it? Or would you just accept having to pay to get it fixed and do that instead? Thanks

Platinum does scratch easily. A jeweller might be able to buff it up a bit but the scratches will return to it.

My wedding and engagement rings are both platinum and yes they get the odd scratch but nothing like you’ve described. Is it hallmarked?

The great thing about platinum jewellery is that it doesn’t tend to lose metal, it just moves around so it can easily be polished to be as good as new. It shouldn’t change colour or fade though and £2,500 without diamonds is extremely expensive. Ours were from De Beers down Bond Street so pricey and nowhere near that.

Check the hallmark and take it back and query it with the jewellers. Our wedding rings and my engagement ring get a free annual polish and prong check.

I’ve worn my £300 in 2004 platinum wedding band since 2004 and it’s not discoloured or scratched. That’s really strange.

Platinum doesn’t change colour. It’s very strong and great for jewellery. I’m assuming this is not a rhodium plated finish so a deep scratch is odd in my view unless you’ve really had a coming together with something very solid! Yes, take it back. Agreed that’s expensive if without diamonds. Is it hallmarked and did it come from a reputable jeweller?

To add my wedding ring has tiny diamonds round half the band and didn’t cost that much. I think it was about £600 from Birmingham jewellery quarter.

Thanks all for the replies! Apologies, i forgot to add that it is a diamond wedding ring, hallmarked and it was from F Hinds. Its the first Platinum ring that I have ever owned, so wasn’t sure how normal it was for a scratch like this to appear. I previously wore a yellow gold ring gold ring for 20 years and never had a scratch like this!

@Beaglebum84 What is the mark on it? The hallmark. Platinum is harder than gold and a scratch is more associated with rhodium plated white gold. Changing colour might indicate white gold too as the manufacturing process has changed. I’d be inclined to take it back. It really should never change colour.
