Double Buggy Dilemma

BeckieB · 18/06/2008 21:51

Need some advice on double buggy. Is it best to go side-to-side or a la Phil and Ted's. Really would like newborn to lie flat and not sure if this is possible with a side-to-side. Equally not that enamoured with idea of one in back of Phil and Ted's not being able to see infront of them. Mind-blowing decisions........ Anyone got the definitive answer?!

I have never seen a duowalker before, they do look quite good. By the look of it though there is nearly 5 inches difference in the width of the P&T and the duowalker - that is quite a lot.

I know that I can really tell the difference when I add a pannier bag to my P&T (which probably sticks out around that much), the extra width makes it much more tricky to manouvere around shops through doorways etc. AND my front door is slightly narrower than the duowalker so would by nigh on impossible to get it into my house - do I have an unusually small doorway?

dizzydixies · 19/06/2008 22:41

washersaurus mine will just fit in the front door - its 76cm wide and I measured - am notorious for my measurements being WAY off so checked and checked again lol

it was the height of dd2 that ruled out the P&T for me because until baby is old enough to go in seat underneath dd2 would be sitting up on the second seat about lie flat baby with her head poking out of the top - ok if you live somewhere sunny and warm but not so good in farking scotland

Washersaurus · 19/06/2008 22:48

Hmm I haven't seen the Vibe buggy in the flesh, but have to admit the newborn/toddler seating arrangement worried me because of the hood thing when I was looking at the Sport model. It turned out not to be a problem at all and DS1 is quite tall. We didn't use the buggy in that configuration for very long anyway.

I think if I had seen the duowalker before I may have been swayed but am very happy not to be left pushing a wide double buggy when DS1 is at nursery and only DS2 is in it!

dizzydixies · 19/06/2008 22:52

was a consideration but am taking dd2 out of nursery while I'm on matty and seeing as I'll be doing the school walk for dd1 and the dog walking etc it'll get enough use I hope

otherwise I've spent a whole lot of credit on a pram that won't get used enough and I'll have to listen to a whole lot of 'I told you so's' from dh and there may be a divorce

Washersaurus · 19/06/2008 22:56

I too dread those conversations with DH, tbh I think I would have told him I loved the P&T even if I had hated it .

Remember that it is very important to get out of the house (to avoid housework), so I'm sure you will get loads of use out of it

dizzydixies · 19/06/2008 22:58

I felt, after months of badgering him to help with the decision making, that it was better to leave him the sod out of it as he wasn't THAT interested and it'll be me who uses it

he was asked Red or Aqua and therein lay the extent of his research and input

apart from his Mastercard number of course - priceless as they say

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 23:02

We're expecting our 2nd in feb and ds will only be 18m so will still need pushchair, and I know it's way too early to think about, but, my god I had no idea there were so many different types of doubles. How scary!

dizzydixies · 19/06/2008 23:13

littleboyblue I have a big issue about have a new pram for new baby in house before baby arrives so if you can wait about 6wks till dc3 arrives I'll let you know about this one after that!

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 23:14

Gosh, yes. Not buying one yet, I'm only 6 weeks in! Was just interested when saw the thread title.

JamInMyWellies · 20/06/2008 07:26

Thanks Dizzy will defo look at it as an alternative to the P&T.

greenelizabeth · 20/06/2008 12:06

JamInMyWellies, Unless you are TINY, with Tiny, tiny children who are not planning to GROW, then don't get P&T. I am only average and my dd quickly became too big for P and T.

silverfrog · 20/06/2008 12:28

I am surprised to see so many people sayin ghteir dcs outgrew the P&T. Dd1 is nearly 4, about 110cm, and over 18kg. She is autistic, and that is why we still have her in a buggy, and she is the main reason why we had to get a P&T - it was the only pram we found that she would still be comfortable in.

I reckon she's got a good year's room left in it (although hopefully she won't be in it for that long iyswim)

admittedly, I have never had her in the top seat AND used the hood (isn't that what coats are for? ) but that is the only situation (ie using the hood, which tbh I don't find that good at covering dd2 when she's in the main seat) where she doesn't fit.

I have a Maclaren side-by-side.It can lay totally flat, and the cosy toes kept DD2 nice and warm,as she was born in oct.DD1 sits beside her, from 2yrs to now nearly 4yrs.

Im not keen on P&T,as it looks bulky, and doesn't seem to "grow" well with child.

I dont like the tandem style either,as one always has a back view of a seat.

I'd dispense with carrycots etc. if I had my time over, and just start and finish with a Maclaren.

sweetkitty · 20/06/2008 13:00

oh another double buggy thread

I had 18 months between DD1 and DD2 and had:

A M&P Twin Aria hated with a passion, seats v narrow, parcel shelf broke after a week, cosytoes too large so couldn't fold buggy with them on, difficult to bump up even small kerbs, difficult to steer if you have children of a different weight in it.

A Graco tandem - better than M&P but still pretty useless, better at getting up kerbs and lovely for baby to lie flat but felt very long and bulky.

This time after much deliberation (mostly with dizzy) I am just about to get a P&T, reasons for this:

will have 2 1/2 year gap between DDs, DD2 still needs a pram especially if I have the 3 of them with me but I expect she will be walking by Easter at the latest. So plan is to use P&T until then, then sell it and get new single. DD2 isn't as tall as other DC that don't fit under the hood.

dizzy - love that pram but can't really justify it with my age gaps, wish I had one last time round though

I am actually hankering after a single lie flat pram as well now, think DP would leave me though.

MuffinMclay · 20/06/2008 13:09

I've got mixed thoughts on my P&T (dcs 2.1 years and 4 months). On the one hand the wheels are great and it copes admirably with dog walking on very narrow, bumpy and muddy country paths.

On the other hand, the build quality is pretty poor, and ds2 has already outgrown the under seat (but isn't able to go in the other one yet) and screams whenever he goes in it (he looks pretty uncomfortable in there). Ds1 - a very short 2 year old - is too big for the top bit; I can't use the hood or raincover because his head gets in the way.

cataisolidav · 20/07/2008 20:16

dizzydixies - I am trying to decide between a Mountain buggy and the Duowalker - can you let me know how you get on with yours please - can't find a stockist near me and bit worried about buying one without trying it out first, so i would love to hear your comments on it
Thanks

tassisssss · 20/07/2008 20:21

I have an out and about double nipper and it's really great. I see you're keen on baby lying flat, i was too as my 1st 2 babies were in a carrycot for first 4-6 months. dd2 is 7 weeks old and looks very comfy in our nipper. A great pram, fab to push, really surprising amounts of storage underneath and seems to fit through most doorways. Try one!

cluckyagain · 20/07/2008 20:26

Had both a side by side and a P&T - hands down the P&T won.

P.S. I'm TALL, kids are tall and heavy and always fitted although I did always put the big one on the top as the bottom one does get wrecked otherwise.
