Cabin storage bed for 3.5 year old boy - do they have to be 6 to have one?

As we are now expecting number 2 ds will have to share his room, so am thinking ahead on ideas of furniture.
I thought a cabin bed with draws underneath would be good to save space - want one for around £150. When looking on the net some of them say age over 6 - is this because of the height of bed?
Ds is big for his age, height of a 5 yesr old.

we brought ds1 a cabin bed last year (he is 8 si a bit of an age difference to you i realise) but now i really regret it. in wish i had just brought standard bunkbeds. we did measure all the room and worked it out and thought there was enough room for ds1 to have the cabin bed(it has a wardrobe and desk underneath it, so he has his own space)and ds2 to have a bed but once built it seemed bigger and we realised that it wasnt going to go to plan. now we're stuck and im going to have to get ds2 a toddler bed for a few years whiloe they share till we can afford to have the loft converted or move.

The instructions for my dd's bunk bed stated that you should be 6 to sleep on the top bunk. We got it when dd1 was 4.5 and dd2 had just turned 2. They often both sleep in the top bunk together (plus cat!!) and it has been fine.

DD1 used to fall out of bed frequently but she hasn't since moving to the top bunk because of the safety rail.

ds2 is 2 in a few weeks and can climb up the bed really quick, he just cant get down.
we got this one, but in blue

Worley - thats the one I have been looking at! Been measuring in the bedroom to see how tall it would be. Feel better knowing other young children sleep in higher beds!

i cant fault the bed at all, it is good value, just a shame it didnt all work out how i wanted!! we brought the matching wardrobe also, with the 4 shelves on the left hand side, they have some plastic crates that all their lego etc goes in and they actually keep it tidy.

if i could knock the chimmney breast out and have a perfectly square room it would all be fine!!

These ones are lower down, but my ds1 was in a top bunk from age 4. I does depend on hte child though, dd is almost 7 and only just getting a high bed!

Ds is 22 months and can climb on the top bunk without the ladder!

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 18/06/2008 16:26

Have been looking for lower beds, seems the high sleepers are more fashionable at the moment. Maybe I should wait and see if I have a ds or dd and buy bunk beds, it's difficult to know what to do, his room is a double size bedroom but want to get storage for toys and clothes under the bed if I can!

wallace, your ds sounds like my ds2, he keeps trying to climb on the side of the setee, on to the windowsill then up the shelves on the wall. we call him spiderbaby.

mumtoboys · 18/06/2008 19:30

I'd go for bunks once you think they're ready. DS1 is 3.1 and DS 11 mths. When DS2 is ready for a bed I'm thinking of buying those bunks you can also use as separate beds if DS1 is still not ready for top bunk.

Like the look of these as v nice wood. Ikea do cheaper ones.

DS3 (now just 4) in the middle of the night fell out of his sister's cabin bed (they were bed sharing) a few months ago. Only a few months ago, and I would be loathe to let him sleep up there again, for a long time. But DS2 slept in a high sleeper from the age of 4.5yo quite safely... must depend a lot on the child when they're ready.

Wallace · 18/06/2008 20:47

lol at spiderbaby! Just looked at your profile and he looks SO cheeky

worley · 18/06/2008 21:32

thankyou wallace, oh he is that alright, hes such a character, completly opposite to his big brother, who was such a good baby and still is, ds2 knows the power of the word no and will run off at any given oportunity, laughing hysterically!!

i love the picture of yours eating the brocolli!!

Amphibimum · 18/06/2008 21:39

i cant recommend highly enough to get dc furniture from ikea... its great stuff and really well priced so that even if they grow out of it in a couple of years you are able to sell on and replace it. really, i wish id gotten the boys' bunks from there.

wrt high beds and age; my dc have been in top bunks from age 3 and the 2yo climbs up and down no prob at all. the safety rail means they never fall out.

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 20/06/2008 20:35

Am thinking now I may hold off and get a bunk bed. Really not sure!

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 21/06/2008 15:02

worley - if you're Suffolk why aren't you on the Suffolk thread???

My ds1 is 4 and has a similar mid-sleeper to that link. I think the age 6 recommendation is for the high sleepers and top bunks, mid-sleepers aren't so much of a problem.

I bought him his new bed to make him feel grown up when ds2 was on the way as they have to share a room and the drawers are very useful!

worley · 21/06/2008 21:31

i didnt realise it was still going! i think i posted on it a long time ago, but only nip on to chat to a few other mners who i have got quite friendly with, sometimes i will have the occassional trawl through to see whats going on!
i will search fot it now

PillockOfTheCommunity · 22/06/2008 09:57
