I am a student nurse and about to go on first placement and looking to buy some scissors to keep in my pocket. There are so many so I wondered if anyone could recommend either scissors or where to buy.
thanks

Be very careful keeping anything sharp in your pockets?!!
SP services do lots.

What are you planning on using them for?

ShetlandishMum · 14/02/2026 11:07

It really depends on what you're going to use it for. I have one like this in my uniform and find another if needed.

I am a nurse of 20+ yrs.
Please remember that anything used on 1 pt will need to be cleaned before being used on another pt. Dressing scissors are single use only and supplied in large quantities.
In an emergency situation tuff cut type scissors can be useful but unless you are working in the ED it’s not worth it.

Also they will dig into you anytime you bend over.
Unfortunately can also be used as weapon.

As a nurse, please please wait. You’ll have no idea as to what you actually need day to day until you actually start. The stuff I keep in my pockets is completely different, I would imagine, to the stuff you would think I would need. Good luck!

Scissorsplease · 14/02/2026 13:38

Thanks all, I hadn’t bought any as I wasn’t sure I would need them and just sorted out a watch, light pen and locker padlock but someone then said you’ll need scissors too. So that got me thinking about getting them.

You’ve all helped me to confirm I won’t buy any and will see how I get on.

You can get ones with a pocket clip, but as PP have said, they are often discouraged these days due to safety concerns. A long, long time ago we used to use a short section of oxygen tubing as a cover to prevent injuring ourselves.

What I will say is that artery forceps are the best thing ever. Not for nursing, but for your handbag. They are the original multitool.

Surgical scissors are single use only
You cannot use your own to cut dressings etc
They need to be sterile
