Vinted - sellers who have loads of stuff ‘brand new with tags’

What’s going on if sellers have 20+ items from known brands (nothing too posh, Next and similar) listed as ‘brand new with tags’ and photos that show unused items? I can understand a couple of things if there were unwanted gifts or an impulsive purchase and then never got round to wearing it, but why would someone have loads of stuff to sell that’s brand new? Surely buying and then reselling isn’t a business, am I wrong to assume that these are stolen goods?

Shoplifters.

PickledElectricity · 18/01/2026 20:49

Five finger discount, man.

user1471464218 · 18/01/2026 20:49

North face, Nike and similar brands probably fake.

Next and m&s I reckon more likely bought in the sale or did a big online order and missed the return window.

I'm sure there's plenty of stolen stuff too!

FryingPam · 18/01/2026 20:49

Ok good to know that I’m not overly suspicious then.

I’d assume they bought it on sale and are making some profit. Shoplifters will probably steal sportswear or brands rather than Next and M&S etc

SilenceInside · 18/01/2026 20:51

Isn’t it possible that it’s things they’ve bought in sales or from outlet shops that they’re trying to make a profit on?

Manifesto · 18/01/2026 20:51

Yep. I was interested in some M&S boots with tags. Looked at the sellers page and every last thing she’s selling is M&S footwear with tags. Must have been quite the haul

Mum1822 · 18/01/2026 20:54

There was a thread after Christmas about watching people buying sacks of Next sale items in the sale and clearing shelves of all sizes, presumably to sell on Vinted.

I didn’t know people did this. I thought shoplifting too.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/01/2026 20:57

Not familiar with Vinted but can't you publicly message in their comments or feedback and say "Hey, how come you have all this BNWT stuff"?

Mottledgrey · 18/01/2026 20:59

This! I looked at the Next sale for boys and then went on Vinted to try and find something that was out of stock. Someone had literally bought the entire set of boys clothes in the sale and were selling them on Vinted for £5 more.

WhitegreeNcandle · 18/01/2026 21:00

Our local auction house often has pallets of clothing from various companies you buy unseen. I’ve always assumed they end up on Vinted

FortyFacedFuckers · 18/01/2026 21:02

i was shocked to see this on a thread before, nearly everything I have sold on Vinted was new with tags generally next/river island items that I had bought and either didn’t like on or just never got round to wearing, I then lost a lot of weight and decided to clear out and sold everything, it absolutely isn’t stolen

Growlybear83 · 18/01/2026 21:03

Most of the stuff I sell on Vinted is new with tags. I’m a bit of a shopoholic and have a regular clearout of clothes thst I’ve never got round to wearing. None of my things have been stolen and I don’t think I’ve ever sold anything on Vinted for more than I paid for it originally.

IdreamedAdreamINtimesGONEby · 18/01/2026 21:05

There's quite a few sellers I see where they have multiple items the same / all new with tags / a huge amount. One in particular I remember with loads and loads of watches new in boxes. I asked them where they got them from and they said the shop / un_wanted gifts etc.

Clearly bullshit and clearly shoplifted.

I don't buy from sellers like this anymore if they have loads of new stuff with tags. I don't want to be a part of fuelling shop lifting.

Manicule · 18/01/2026 21:14

Gosh, this is depressing. I recently started putting a few things on Vinted after being very nervous of trying it - I had lots of brand-new shoes (genuinely 'new with tags') which I've never worn because I developed a problem with one ankle and I'll never be able to get into them now. I just wanted to declutter and make a bit of money back but they’ve gone for silly prices, far less than I paid for them.
Definitely nothing nefarious going on!

Iocanepowder · 18/01/2026 21:18

We’ve had lots of trousers bought for DC2 as that are just too baggy for her as she is very little. So my friend will put those on vinted for me.

I also had a friend once who bought absolutely shit loads of stuff from a sports shop that was closing down and made a killing selling it all on ebay. Even sports socks.

Twizzlemarch · 18/01/2026 21:19

I had a few years of very poor mental health and during that time I bought loads of clothes online that I left too late to return and just shoved in the back of the wardrobe. I’m much better now and have been selling it all on Vinted.
Saying that one of DD’s friends buys things from an outlet village down the road. Sticks them on Vinted for a profit and if they don’t sell in a couple of weeks returns them for a refund.

Damnd · 18/01/2026 21:19

Wait have you not been on Whatnot? They buy wholesale and pallets, lots of banded stuff. It's a huge thing and some sellers use vinted as side hussle

ForPinkDuck · 18/01/2026 21:22

Someone on here said they buy job lots of reiss stuff and resale on vinted. Id love to know where they buy this stuff.

Sohelpmegod25 · 18/01/2026 21:22

I buy loads of stuff in sales, especially for my kids and they don’t wear it all so sell a lot with tags on un-used, it’s all absolutely genuine no shoplifting or anything dodgy but I guess shoplifters do use it as a platform to shift stolen goods.

Eastmeetswest1 · 18/01/2026 21:29

I am finally getting round to selling a few things on Vinted (only just started learning how to) as youngsters growing up. Have started by listing clothes that they were gifted at birthdays / Xmas and were the wrong size but no gift receipt given. Just trying to de-clutter the loft! Definitely not shop lifted!

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 18/01/2026 21:30

I had a horrible habit of buying clothes slightly too small because I’d ‘slim into them’. Obviously, I didn’t!

But then I tried Mounjaro which was so successful I shot past them on the way down. All on Vinted now

MorningFocus · 18/01/2026 21:32

Next sale, judging by the thread on here about the horrors.

Bought in bulk. Boden, for instance, used to sell clothing by the ton, unseen. Needed a good iron/steam and ready for resale.

Fake - branded trainers, Birkenstocks, Dr Martin’s. Easy to sift by sending and asking if they are ok to go through verification…

SoddingSoda · 18/01/2026 21:33

The thing I don’t understand is that everyone expects a bargain on vinted.

Add two quid for postage and then the fee, certain kids supermarket clothes are barely worth it.

With Next sale clothes, if somebody is buying them at 50% discount, adding on a couple of quid profit, plus the extra costs, how much are you really saving as a buyer?

DierdreBarlow · 18/01/2026 21:38

I'm a bit of a shopaholic and I tend to buy quite a lot of clothes. If I haven't worn the clothing or shoes after a year or so, I tend to put it on Vinted nwt. Someone messaged me once to ask if a pair of shoes were the genuine make (which they were) but, really?? If you don't trust the seller, just scroll by.

Edited to say, no we're not all thieves. And yes, some sellers probably are. So don't buy then, if you can't establish the provenance.
