Taggies / Comforters in general?

UpSinceCrapOClock · 13/06/2008 08:43

DS (3 months) seems to have developed a love of sucking cloth and having it in his hands. Am considering buying him some sort of comforter, but it's a bit of a minefield out there (never had this with dd, so no previous experience!)

Spoke to a mum recently who really recommended Taggies, and have been looking at them online. I love the colours etc and the idea of the labels (can remember I loved rubbing my duvet cover between my finger and thumb as a child), but they only seem to do them in fleece.

Has anyone else had a child who liked sucking on cloth? Is fleece ok for that (makes me think of a mouthful of cotton wool in a 'fingernails down the blackboard' sort of way, but then I don't have a love of sucking cloth!)? Any recommendations gratefully received!

Thanks - good to know he liked sucking on it as well. Think I'll probably get one and see how it goes (am far too lazy busy to make my own cloth one if the fleece one works just as well!)

My DS loved sucking cloth at that age too. He used to suck his muslins all the time. He got a taggie from a relative and the texture didnt bother him. We lost the original taggie and bought him a new one which was a brushed fleece nicer texture.

I'd stick with using a muslin as a comforter because they're cheap, easy to wash etc - if you get a particular comforter you might have to get several just in case they're lost. Plus the muslin is much less interesting once they're older so they won't use it as long as a particular toy etc.

Hmmm, can see the point about the muslin (it's what he using now anyway!) I'll admit I was maybe a little attracted by the colours and design of the taggies Will chew on it (no pun intended!)

JIMW- (love your name!) - thanks for the extra reassurance on the texture thing!

We tried dd with muslins (cheap, replaceable, quick to wash and dry) but she likes those cotton jersey baby blankets best.
Am just pleased she hasn't attached to the expensive organic hand-felted comforter MIL bought...

mumo75 · 13/06/2008 15:08

my 2 youngest have both used muslin clothes, they are fantastic,i bought 12 and then as they got older i cut them in half,as we'd lost a few
very easy to replace if lost just wash them 1st before they have them
ive also dyed them as theyve got grubby, they were pale lemon---now bright orange, navy blue, bright pink dylon washing machine dye i used

If they want a comforter I think they will just pick something they want. My DS likes a particular teddy and uses it by chewing it's paws which get very disgusting and I have to wash it a couple of times a week to stop it smelling of mildew!! A taggie would be much less gross. He had one, and liked it but never loved it. Worth a try though.

McDreamy · 13/06/2008 16:08

We are MASSIVE taggy fans here, DS loves his taggy!! He doesn't suck it he rubs it on his lip!

BeauLocks · 13/06/2008 16:09

Muslin squares are good. Ds2 uses them as a comforter and it doesn't matter if you lose them.

TigerFeet · 13/06/2008 16:09

My dd still loves her Cuski at 3.11 - they aren't fleecy and they wash really easily

cuski

My DS1 is obsessed with his Blankie. It was bought before he was born and he got very attached to it at about 6 months old. I searched high and low for another one in case this one got lost (he is distraught if it is in the wash etc, so hideous experience if he is sick on it in night etc). Finally found one on ebay a week or two ago and ended up paying £41 for it as obviously other children are equally obsessed .

My DTD who is now 5 months has got attached to one of DS1's old Blankie's that we bought about 18 months ago in the hope it might do as a surrogate. I noticed she was becoming very attached so just went online today and they are no longer produced. However found one on ebay, current bidding at £26 with 2 days left.

So... the moral of the story is, buy two or more asap if you want to avoid any tears!!!

my ds (18 month) sucks his thumb whilst stroking the muslin care label on his top lip - handy its just muslins as they are easily replaceable & washable. Dd now aged 6 had a finely knitted shawl which was £25 every few months as each one got torn, bit manky (hand wash only )

ManhattanMama · 14/06/2008 04:02

DS will only sleep if he has one of his cheapo receiving blankets in the cot with him - they're just small brushed cotton sheets that were about 5 pound for 4 from Babies R Us. I have 8 of them so when they get soggy/puked on they just get swapped out! He just seems to hold them up to his nose and sniff them

I would try not to buy anything expensive or irreplaceable as a comforter

dd has a taggies and loves the "tags" YET her firm favourite was her cuski. She had it from day one of birth and is now 3 years old and is known as "smelly cuski" . Santa brought her and ds to be one at christmas which is "red cuski" (original names or what ) and as she lost "red cuski" a few weeks ago and was distrought we ended up buying her "pink" (yeah yeah, the names get better!) cuski...

So dd now has 3 and ds has 2 and you know what............they are the best comforters ever! The odd time I have managed to wash them they have come up brilliantly and we have just returned from a weeks holiday abroard where both dd and ds were so chilled at night etc...I swear the cuski's helped.

Both dd and ds do excatly the same with them as each other. Sit and chew the end and twiddle the tag or other end..Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh..

Well worth it imo. x

My dd used to like rubbing the label on her blankets between her fingers.
She had a carrycot sized one up until she was about 18 months, when dh took it off her

But even now she still rubs a label between her fingers when she goes to sleep and shes nearly 5.

Ds1 however has a stinky jellycat rabbit that looks completely disheveled.
Poor thing.

Lionstar · 14/06/2008 13:28

We have a beloved red Cuski too. In fact we have two to rotate, as they get washed weekly. Invaluable as a sleep aid.

BirdyArms · 14/06/2008 14:03

Ds2 quite likes his taggie which was a gift when he was born. I am not a fan - they are pricey (for what they are) if you need to replace them or have a spare for the wash. Keep meaning to get rid of it, he will happily sleep without it at the moment ans don't want him to get more attached.

Ds1 has a soft toy which I much prefer, it can be really useful to persuade him to do things eg look at teddy climbing into hte car seat.
