@luckyladygal can't recommend Miele enough. I've bought four over the past twenty odd years. All of them are still going strong but people keep pinching them!

The most basic drag along cylinder one with onboard tool storage would be my suggestion. I've had fancier ones, but the last two I bought were really basic and are the two I still use (although I did retro add a hepa filter to the one in my own house).

Both my previous and current cleaners love them (previous cleaner was the reason I lost my original hoover to my parents house as she cleaned for them too and demanded a better vacuum there, when they died it went to a family friend and the friend just messaged me over christmas to say she always thinks of us when vacuuming as she is still using the hoover. Hoover is now 22 years old).

The disastrous shark was bought by the person I care for. I replaced it within three months with a miele and her cleaner couldn't have been more grateful and has subsequently bought one for her own house. I think this is high praise.

I have a Shark cordless anti hair wrap, bought in Argos sale 2 years ago and it's wonderful, even copes with dog floof. Charge lasts for more than long enough to do a 3 bed house including hall, stairs and landing.
I had a Dyson Animal before that which was OK while it lasted but the Shark is better. Still have the Dyson for a quick run round upstairs if needed.
I do not understand the Henry lovers. I've used a couple when provided in holiday cottages. Clunky, much too cumbersome, suction pipe gets stuck on everythibg. Suction's OK but nothing to write home about, and every time I saw his stupid little face I wanted to kick it. Who puts a face on a bloody vacuum cleaner?
No idea about Miele. Hear they're great but out of my price range, or at least above what I'm willing to pay for a dust sucker.
