Tackeriffic plastico garage toy, or tasteful wooden one?

Hello!

We are going to buy a garage toy for DS on his 3rd birthday, we would like a nice wooden one BUT I have a sneaky feeling the plastic one that makes lovely noises would be favourite -

Do you have a wooden one? do your DCs play with it or has it been stuffed under the bed?

I'm not averse to plastic by the way, especially if he would prefer it, but think wooden might last longer/be nicer/ match the brio a bit better

What do you think?!

ds got a wooden one (Plan City) at Christmas when he was three. He does enjoy playing with it. It has some road track that attachs to it and connects up with the Brio train track.

BUT ....

he LOVES his friends plastic one, always makes a beeline for it and gets really engrossed in it.

Make of that what you will

We had the ELC wooden fire station and it fell to bits very easily. I was very disappointed with it, particularly as there were some very sharp staples exposed when the roof came off. In my opinion, wooden toys are lovely but frequently aren't robust enough.

The main thing about a garage is it has to have a lift. Does the wooden one have a lift?

Both dd and ds lurve lurve the hideous plastic elc one which takes up unnecessary space and which my parents insisted on buying. They really do love it. More than almost any other toy.

I saw a really nice wooden one though, from pintoy, in a toy shop the other day, and ds seemed to like playing with that as well though.

Don't know about garages, but someone bought ds a lovely wooden castle and while he despondently prods it sometimes, he lusts after the lovely plastic toymobil type ones (complete with plastic dungeon and slime).

Kindersurprise · 11/06/2008 09:12

DD got loads of lovely wooden toys and hardly played with them.

DS got lots of tacky plastic toys that make noise and flash.

We have a Wader garage. It is really sturdy and takes a good bashing.

ggglimpopo · 11/06/2008 09:15

tackeriffic is great word.

Plastic one to play with (hidden in handwoven bulrush basket when not in use; bunting-wooden one on display.

LOL Goosey I was going to buy ds a wooden castle for his birthday. Maybe this is good advice to save the money and venture into the dark world of playmobil

ds has the fisher price one, the older version than Legoleias link and he's had it for 2 years and loves it, he's 3 now and its meant to stay in his room but its forever getting thrown down the stairs to play with in the living room and out side, the nursery and the playgroup both have wooden garages and they are forever out of use waiting to be repaired.

Legoleia · 11/06/2008 12:44

So can anyone recommend the bestest, most entertaining garage then, please?

So we got the wooden Argos one for DS2 for Christmas. It was a nightmare to assemble and fell apart really quickly, so we took it back. I really wanted a wooden one but generally they are very expensive, as linked by LL above.

Then recently I saw the plastic Argos one linked above (but in Boots). It was only about £7 (!) in the sale, and DS loves it. And it is pretty sturdy. And it makes noises.

So my non-tack principles have had to give way to DS' enjoyment, and once again plastic tat rules the room.

Bubbaloo · 12/06/2008 14:13

Ds1(also 3)has the ELC Big City garage which is very good.It comes with a helipad and helicopter, car wash, lift, sound, and it's 2 storeys high which is nice. You can also let go pf the cars at the top of the garage and it will zoom all the way to the ramp at the bottom, which is quite good fun.
Ours was bought at christmas time and they also included 25 cars-don't know if that's still the case, but it's a great garage and if you want to buy it before the end of the month,I have a £5 off vouvher for ELC which you're very welcomne to.

Bubbaloo · 12/06/2008 14:16

Sorry about the typo's.

orangina · 12/06/2008 14:30

I got ds the plastic fisher price garage for christmas and he loves it. All the wooden ones look lovely but seem to take up so much more room.....

orangina · 12/06/2008 14:31

(GLTC one looks lovely but really haven't got the space for it without it becoming the focus of the living room.....)

orangina · 12/06/2008 14:34

Or you get him the vintage one from ebay....
