Our 15yo DS never asks for anything. Literally. I've managed to come up trumps every Christmas until this year. Completely stumped. The sort of things that come up on teen threads just aren't him. I quote "I'm a humble person" 😭
But hallelujah! A break through! After much probing, on the school run today, he has agreed he would like an x box. He says digital is fine.
I've had a look and there seems to be several models. Advice needed please!

There are two current models.

One has a disc drive for playing physical copies of games - this is the Series X.

The other has no disc drive - this is the Series S. It is also cheaper.

If he has piles of old games from an older model of Xbox, get him the Series X.

If he has no old games, get him the Series S and buy a Game Pass which gives him online games access for a period of time, often a month or a year depending on your budget. He can still buy games and download then.

I have the S, the tech quality isn't much different unless he's a heavy gamer.

Thankyou so much. He's only got a Switch, so I'll look at the series S - do I just go for the newest model and assume it's the best? Can you only play if you have a game pass or can you buy individual games like with switch?

Oh, I see a 12 month pass is good value, I'll get that. Also future easy present idea, going forward.

He'll be able to buy and play games without a Games Pass, but it'll be a bit interesting for him as part of the gift, he could carry on paying for that himself in future!

There are only two versions of the S and the only difference is the size of the memory.

Thanks again. I feel like not just the World but the very Universe has been lifted from my shoulders 😊

I'm back! Can anyone advise whether I should be buying the xbox core games pass or the ultimate games pass, to go with the s series? I want him to be able to access lots of games and play with friends online. I'm so clueless - it's all jargon to me 😳

So he can play with friends online with all the Games Pass options, so that's the main thing!

The only substantial difference between the levels is the numbers of games included in the access.

Remember he can buy any game he wants to own, so he isn't restricted at all.

Personally I'd buy the Game Pass Core which is the entry level one and see how he gets on with it.

You can upgrade this at any time and pay the difference if you want to, it doesn't restart the contract, just ups it from that date on.

Oh I didn't know you could upgrade that's good to know thanks. Riding to the rescue again!
I see gift cards are an option as well. There's a bundle in Smyths with 3 months ultimate pass - if I gave him a gift card as well, he could choose his way forward from there 🤔
