Present for DS and DIL on wedding

marmalade007 · 05/12/2025 05:35

Hi everyone I am looking for a gift for my son and DIL on their wedding. They are pretty set up, but not completely. Her favourite colour is green, DS will be happy with anything.
Problems needs to be in Australia or ship to Australia ( most stores seem to). I'm drawing a blank. I've looked at some waterford crystal and some lovely dinner sets, not sure if that's a bit blah.
I don't buy them individual gifts as well do I?
Don't want to do an "experience" as they still havent used the hot air ballooning /breakfast I got them for my Ds's 30th last year.
Completely lost what to get. I did think of a painting but that is so individual.
I'm leaning towards a cutlery set ( though thats so old school) or an amazing vase or a set of crystal glasses.
What has everyone else done?
Help pls thanks.

Sounds like you're after a traditional gift?

Unless there's a gift lift it's tricky. What about some slightly less traditional ideas?

Matching lightweight dressing gowns in green? Maybe in silk?

A night in hamper? Champagne, a posh meal kit, box of chocs.

A terramundi in green?

A small appliance, bean to cup coffee machine?

A crate of special wine?

Pompom12 · 05/12/2025 05:42

How about the Ninja Slushi machine? I would personally love one but it's pricey. Would help them through the hot summers!

Guavafish1 · 05/12/2025 05:44

Cash

Mumdiva99 · 05/12/2025 05:46

A hot air balloon bfast us hard bonuses because you have to book, then you need the weather, then you probably have to travel to it.
Are they paying for the whole wedding? If so and they are going to be skint - a voucher to their favourite local restaurant.

A food hamper to arrive when they return after the wedding (and honeymoon of they ate having one).
Do they already live together? If so ask them what they want/need for the home. We got garden centre vouchers and bought garden furniture which we love. We already had inside stuff. If you asked me today I would say bean to cup coffee maker. When I was young and just setting up some there were loads of things.

Lurkingandlearning · 05/12/2025 05:46

You say they aren’t fully set up, just get them something they have told you they need. Unless you’re absolutely sure what their taste is, don’t buy anything they will be expected to use or look at regularly.

I think cash would be the most practical gift, especially considering the cost of shipping

Tourmalines · 05/12/2025 05:49

Not helpful with any ideas . Mine got married last year but have everything. I gave them cash .

Sunnyintervalsandshowers · 05/12/2025 06:05

I'd give them a shortlist so you feel that you're still choosing their present - I wouldn't buy something like expensive crystal unless you know for sure they want it.
Just for context, I have even been given crystal by recently-married friends because they know I like it and wondered if I wanted it, because otherwise it was going to be taken to a charity shop shortly after the wedding 😮 (they didn't have space for it!)

JC89 · 05/12/2025 06:15

We were given a lovely Denby crockery set for our wedding - we chose the range. We use it every day. Don't be afraid of a traditional gift, but give them a budget and ask them what they want!

InTheNotswolds · 05/12/2025 06:52

Do they have a garden? Do they like art? I got a lovely piece of sculpture from my mum for my wedding and a beautiful painting. If you try to find something local then you could give them something really special they will always treasure?

MarkerBonVine · 05/12/2025 07:00

Ask them, better to do that then spend money on something they don't like. That way they are happy when they open the gift as opposed to a wtf moment.

sesquipedalian · 05/12/2025 07:06

My DD got married last year. I gave cash, but also I bought her a pair of earrings to wear on her wedding day, (I bought my DS a pair of cufflinks when he got married) and I got them some bedding that they wanted, from their wedding list. I also made them a wedding sampler - I knew my daughter would be pleased, and she was, but it’s a very individual thing. If they have a wedding list, get something from that. Please don’t be the MIL who lands her DIL with a vase that you like but she thinks is hideous!

Livelaughlurgy · 05/12/2025 07:09

We got matching suitcases from my sister in law and it was a brilliant present because it was practical and a luxury at the same time. We still use them and I love that they match.

parietal · 05/12/2025 07:54

Definitely ask them. An expensive set of china might flop if they already have a set they like. Do they have a wedding list at all?

LastNovember · 05/12/2025 07:57

you’ll need to contact a wine shop close to where they live but.. a bottle of wine to keep to drink on their 1st, 5th, 10th, etc anniversary?

I second that - we bought it in the spring and it was a godsend in the summer heatwave! It's pricey, but we have used it a lot and will do so again next year.

KimHwn · 05/12/2025 08:06

I'd get them a voucher for an art gallery. I'd love to receive that!

Rocknrollstar · 05/12/2025 08:10

Find a department store near their home in Australia and order from there. Alternatively give them Australian currency to buy what they need

marmalade007 · 05/12/2025 23:18

Thanks everyone. I love the idea of the Ninja slushie machine but I think I'm sold on the matching dressing gowns in green, more like a kimono, maybe one green and one blue ( Ds's fave colour) . Now to find them! Thanks again. There were a lot of ideas I hdn't thought of.

Actually more like a silk gown if I can find them. Kimonos are very distinctive and I think you'd either like them or hate them. Thanks again!

I'm actually in Australia too, I meant if there was something great in the UK ( lots of things) it would have to be able to be shipped here. Sorry I wasn't clear. I've just googled terramundi they look awesome

What do they enjoy doing?

For example I would love a really good tent for many happy camping trips together… or a bike. Or a greenhouse to grow things..

Obviously highly individual but things that look to the future and involve them both.

A telescope for star gazing, matching binoculars, a lovely fire pit for the garden, a beautiful outdoor table / chairs,

I would not want Crystal at all, or any dinner sets or cutlery that I hadn’t chosen.

But lovely gowns is a great idea

Edited

One of mine would love a great tent , but these two getting married are more of the "glamping " type , the firepit is a good idea but they are renting so not sure about that.
I'm leaning towards the gowns and a pair of waterford crystal champagne glasses. I'll try and link to the gowns

not sure if that worked
Would have their wedding date embroidered. No point buying heavy ones as they live in Sydney so would use them for about a week. What do you think about those ( green for her , blue for him) ? Plus the champagne flutes ( waterford) I've already bought.

It was her birthday a few days and I got a toaster delivered ( they told me theirs was broken) Green of course! She sent me a photo immediately, she loved it. I'm out of homeware ideas now.
