Confusion about baby clothes!

Hi all
Pregnant with first baby and confused about baby clothes sizes...

Some brands offer all of these sizes in the same items

  • size "newborn"
  • size "0-1 months"
  • size "0-3 months"

Provided that baby isn't a preemie, which size would you advise for their first outfits?

DD2 was in newborn for about 2 weeks and then into 0-3 months.

Buy limited amounts in newborn and then a few more bits in 0-3.

And then buy more when baby is here. For example DD2 needed sleepsuits in 0-3 but had massive feet so we had to adjust and buy footless suits pretty quickly.

Hard to tell! DC1 was not premature at all, he was nearly 42 weeks but just small at just under 3kg. We had only 0-3 months stuff and had to stop off at Sainsbury's on the way home with him to buy some newborn sizes. I'd get a couple of multipacks in newborn and a couple in 0-3.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Without sounding rude - how big/tall are you and the baby's father? Both DH and I are quite tall and I'm slightly overweight - so both my babies were born bigger and newborn/0-1m lasted about a week or two, so they pretty much went straight into 0-3. My friend and her DH are both petite so the smaller sizes lasted longer.

Look online at the size guides. From memory, Matalan, Next, Sainsburys newborn sizes were up to 9/10lb which would be first size/one month in other shops. Some of the other shops, newborn was only up to about 8lb.

I was predicted to have a 9/10lb baby so bought newborn from those stores. Baby was very average size. They wore the bigger newborn clothes and DH just picked up a smaller newborn pack from Tesco when he went home. They’re all scrunched up anyway so even that will look big. I’d go for the bigger sizes as you’ll get more wear out of them but maybe get one back of newborn in smaller size.

Newborn is the safest bet, but don't get too many things. You can always grab a multipack of basics from a supermarket in whichever size you need if necessary.

My first DS was extremely long, nearly 10lbs, so we skipped newborn entirely and went straight into 0-3 months things. And he also had long feet, so we went to footless quickly too.

Thanks for the advice! This is a tricky one as im slightly under average height and below average weight, but hubby is 6 foot tall, broad shoulders and fairly stocky/muscular! So its a gamble entirely haha.

I would buy a few onesies in newborn then 0-3, they grow so fast! Also ditch the outfits, they’ll live in onesies and so much less stress for you trying to get them dressed in actual clothes.

most of the gifts you’ll get will be for tiny baby and you’ll find that they might only get 1 or 2 wears of something before they’ve grown out of it so don’t go overboard! 🥰

UpMyself · 26/11/2025 11:49

Ask around for newborn clothes as someone might have unopened ones.
You won't need many.
You'll get given larger sizes like 0-3 months. We got lots of things for a winter baby that never got used because by the time the baby fitted into them, the cold season had passed.

Haha this is me and my husband. I had one big baby and one tiny baby 😂

not helpful I know

Justlostmybagel · 26/11/2025 11:52

I would get at least a couple of things in newborn. I listened when everyone told me to only get 0-3 because they would only fit into newborn clothes for 0.2 seconds. Dd was drowning in them though and took forever to grow into them.

PinkCherryPie · 26/11/2025 11:57

Just get a few 0-3 onesies with mittens and feet and some vets for underneath. And really not too many.
See you if you have a baby bank near you you can get free clothes from.
I massively regret buying new. It still all looked brand new when baby outgrew it and not worth anything.

WrittenThatWay · 26/11/2025 12:00

Yeah people love to tell you not to bother with newborn but it really depends on their size! My DS was in newborn/0-1 months (check the size charts because it varies but in some shops this is the same size, up to about 10lbs) for a good month, but he was just under 7lbs at birth. I do think it’s worth having a decent amount of sleepsuits and vests in the small sizes because those early weeks are when they are going through multiple outfit changes a day, between all the spitting up and nappy leaks etc.

Jellybunny56 · 26/11/2025 12:05

Not particularly helpful but honestly it depends on the shop, and the baby!

My son is 2 weeks old, was 8lb born and is now about 8lb 6oz- in theory none of the newborn should fit, e.g. Next newborn is supposedly up to 7lb 8oz (I think) but still fits him perfectly.

He should fit nicely in up to 1 month based on the shops sizing guides but he is still totally drowned by them!

Swarly · 26/11/2025 12:22

Congratulations! I had a baby girl in summer who weighed 7lb 4oz born at 42 weeks. She fit into Newborn for 2-3 weeks, 0-1 month for 5-6 weeks and then into 0-3 months. I recommend getting a mix of everything. She got long legs/big feet so always outgrows the feet first.

Haha! It could go either way then 😆. PP's do have good points about not all sizes being equal... I found George at Asda were quite generous in their sizing. Tbh I'd just buy a few in all sizes and see when they get here.
