What UK things aren't available in the USA?

I have an American friend who loves all things UK. I generally send her a parcel at Christmas, but I'm a bit stuck as to what to put in it this year. I used to send things like Quality Street and Terry's Chocolate Orange, but she can get those at a supermarket called World Market now. All ideas welcome! She's also a huge reader, so ideas for bookish gifts welcome too!

On a related note, I'd like to send her 17 and 18 yesr old daughters a small gift (maybe make up) but am also not sure what brands they have access to.

I could ask them of course, but that would ruin the fun of a surprise package!

I wonder if you can send Christmas crackers now? Not an American thing but I seem to remember problems with the banger part. You could send mince pies , Christmas cake or pudding , anything from Mark's or Boots .

Percy Pigs, flumps and anything from M&S always goes down well as presents.

World Market is ridiculously expensive, especially with the tariffs. Quality Street is still a good present from the UK.

TeenToTwenties · 18/11/2025 19:28

Can they get marmite and proper chocolate?

TheCurious0range · 18/11/2025 19:30

Festive Colin caterpillar, Percy pigs, that reindeer munch stuff, anything that's good quality chocolate, port, maybe a UK based tree decoration, Paddington or something, Yorkshire tea, a kettle....

BusySittingDown · 18/11/2025 19:30

Squashies!

mamagogo1 · 18/11/2025 19:31

You can buy nearly anything in the USA robe honest, better to opt for something regional and meaningful from the area you live or stereotypical things. All creatures great and small merchandise went down with a friend. (Crackers and Christmas puddings were now on sale at supermarket shelves told me)

JDM625 · 18/11/2025 19:35

My American friend always buys Twinings when visiting London. I don't know if its not available in the US or only limited types but if you friend likes tea, its another idea.

Mysonwontwash · 18/11/2025 19:46

When I lived in the states I would get friends and family to send out tea, custard creams, salt and vinegar crisps, angels delight, branstons pickle, tunnocks caramel wafers and bisto gravy,

Hiptothisjive · 18/11/2025 19:55

Sorry OP while all of these are nice suggestions you can get them all there now.

Scottish shortbread because nice tin and says Scottish.
Percy Pigs
Branston Pickle
Prawn cocktail crisps
Monster munch
Soreen malt loaf (but we can get malt bread)
Boots brand name
M&S brand name - some nice creams and soaps

Zofloramummy · 18/11/2025 19:56

Yorkshire tea?

showyourquality · 18/11/2025 19:58

World market is great but very expensive, Target now has some M&S stuff.
I still like Yorkshire Tea, giant chocolate buttons, UK tea towels and hula hoops.

susiedaisy1912 · 18/11/2025 20:04

Proper shortbread?

susiedaisy1912 · 18/11/2025 20:05

Can they get marmite and proper chocolate?

please I'm here to represent America. Do NOT send marmite or we will send all our chitlins to the UK. Or Spam.

Or Hersheys chocolate. Don't force my hand here.

MerrieFerry · 18/11/2025 20:31

Tunnocks caramel wafers and Tunnocks Teacakes

StruggleFlourish · 18/11/2025 20:32

Perhaps it would be more helpful not to ask "what UK items can you not get in the US" but to say what some of your favorite UK items are, that you would enjoy receiving for a birthday/christmas/ special treat/comfort food and then those who are in the US can tell you whether or not they think they can get them or even heard of them or if they've seen them. (And yes I know you can buy almost anything online, but I mean in a UK expat type brick and mortar store.)

Because if you don't know what you're missing, you can't ask for it. But if somebody has a list of all the best things, you can check off which ones you know you can get and which ones you have never heard of or you know you can't get.

coronafiona · 18/11/2025 20:33

Mint toothpaste and squash! I could never find those over there!

Crikeyalmighty · 18/11/2025 20:34

I live in the US and mint is the predominant toothpaste flavour everywhere I’ve ever looked.

À really good old fashioned British cook book. Tempted to say Two Fat Ladies.

That will wean them off the horror of cheap chocolate hopefully.

Any nation that serves marshmallows as a side dish to roast meat needs to give its palate a wobble, frankly.

Otherwise excellent tea bags. With instructions.

Notmyreality · 18/11/2025 20:45

You can get all the above common uk brands in the USA at dedicated British stores that
import them to cater to the expat community.
As PP suggested best thing to get would be something uniquely local/specific.

Beekman · 18/11/2025 20:48

I live in the US and have never seen a toothpaste that wasn’t mint flavoured here. I’m sure there must be some available but generally, mint is king
