Do you know of a decent booster-seat-with-a-back-car-seat is suitable for a child weighing 31lbs?

moopdaloop · 05/06/2008 12:00

we have a maxi cosi rodi and a concord lift - both seem fine (although I don't think my kids are as much as 30 lb yet)

NotABanana · 05/06/2008 12:02

Maxi Cosi Rodi.

All 3 of mine are in them now.

Yes, I suppose removable back.

The problem is, although DS is 4 he is veeery skinny and doesn't fit the weight requiremetn for the ones I've looked at so far. He's starting to strop about being in a "baby seat"

Argh waht is 15kg in pounds? [pita emoticon]

He's 14 kilos, so no good with any of them (gah) although he might be 15kg by October [hopeful]

33lbs = 15kg

moopdaloop · 05/06/2008 12:24

are youe ally bothered about a kilo? I wouldn't be/

moopdaloop · 05/06/2008 12:24

buit if you can use it keep him in a 5-point harness for longer easily I'd do that too

NotABanana · 05/06/2008 12:28

The ones with the back are better.

How old is he? There comes a point when being in a 5-point harness seat is less safe than moving up to one fastened with a full sest belt.

throckenholt · 05/06/2008 12:33

33lbs = 15kg

in tha case I was talking rubbish - mine do weigh that much - although my littliest was only just.

The "baby" seats are better because they have their integral 5 point belt rather than the 3 point adult one that booster use - so I would try and keep him in a bit longer.

throckenholt · 05/06/2008 12:35

another thought - time to move up to the booster seat is when the straps of the other one start to get below their shoulders rather than level or above.

If he is tall then maybe it is time to move even if he isn't heavy enough.

MamaG · 05/06/2008 12:55

He was 4 in March and isn't particularly tall. Main reason for wanting to move him into a booster seat with a back is that I'm pg with DC3 (due in October) and DS's current car seat is so big! Maybe I'm being silly over a kilo, but I'm a stickler for things like that

I would wait until October - mine were in the bigger seats until they were over 5 - if he still fits it use it - no point in wasting money buying a new one if you don't need to.

The boosters with backs aren't much smaller than the other seats anyway.

NotABanana · 05/06/2008 13:04

If in doubt go to Halfords.

My youngest is 2 1/2 stone and in a rodi. He is 99.5cm tall, if that helps.

Niecie · 05/06/2008 13:11

I think the time to move out of the 5-point harness is if the shoulder straps are on their heighest setting but the shoulder strap is not at least level with or higher than the child's shoulder.

Apparently if the straps are lower than the shoulder it is not as safe. That is what I was told anyway. However, I suspect that you need to be a certain weight for the normal 3-point seatbelt to work properly so if your child is tall and skinny you might have problems. Better to stick with the 5 point in that case.

What about something like this which is supposed to last from 9mths to 11yrs

schneebly · 05/06/2008 13:24

think you need a group 1,2,3 style one

moshiecat · 05/06/2008 20:25

I've just bought a great seat that's like a booster, so will seem more 'grown up' to your ds, but has a 5 point harness suitable for up to 25kg, about age 6. It's a Britax elite, on offer from baby equipment complete at the mo.

moshiecat · 05/06/2008 20:29

It's narrow too. ( Just seen your angst on another car seat thread)
