Nosey question ~ If you have one or two children and only have one car for you family - what is it?

Our large saloon is on its last legs and we'll need to get a new (for us) car this year. We have two children and we're beyond the bulky baby equipment stage.

We're wondering if we can get away with getting a smaller car. We'd have to get a roof box as we got camping a few weeks per year but it seems silly to buy a car with a large boot just for a few weeks camping. However, I wouldn't want a tiny boot either.

So what do you have and what do you like about it? Am I missing something? Do we need a 'family' car? Is there such a thing as a small family car?

1 kid and a Polo estate.
Lovely big boot - can get loads in it.

skoda fabia estate. Big boot. Easily takes all our stuff for holidays. Cheap.

I don't think it's a very mn car, though

Thanks for sharing this info. with me. It has given me food for thought.

We had a Berlingo as a hire car on holiday and I loved the sliding side doors and the fact that I could put the buggy in the boot standing up, without folding it first!

But it didn't go up hills very well.

maybe it was old

my berlingo goes up hills fine

I have never even thought about going up hills

maybe your hire car was a duff

go for a test drive in a proper one

It probably was a duff. It wasn't the car we had arranged and became a bit of a family holiday joke but at the same time I liked it. And we were the only ones who did not need to refill with fuel in the fortnight wheras those who got their Ford car of choice did. So we had the last laugh!

What engine is yours?

We have an elderly, cossetted Nissan Primera and two children. It has a fabulous boot size, is economical to run and unobtrusive in a suburban area with a fair amount of fuck-off 4x4s to key, torch or steal.
We cannot afford to replace at the moment but would probably go for either a Zafira (my wish as we have elderly non-drivers living nearby) or a Qashqai, which dh is drawn to because he loves Nissans so much
We still have to use a roof-box for our main hols because of dh's ludicrous fishing gear

I had a 3 dr Fiat Punto until I moved to Scotland whem Tom was 3m. We then had a 5dr Hyuandi Accent, until some arse broke into it and the insurance wrote it off. We now have a Renault Scenic, which I love and the boot isn't overly big. We travel to my parents 3 times a year, 425 miles away, and it was just nice not to have to cram everything in the car for once, lol. Also great as you have the extra space in case you want to bring back anything big. My dad has a Honda Accord which is great. In fact, we were going to have his Civic, but I couldn't get the seat belt round me .
