A clip-on reading light for ds, that won't keep dd awake?

Is there such a thing? He's in the top bunk, she's still in a cot opposite, so can see any light he'd have on. So the more focused, and the less spread, the better, iyswim.

He's really got into reading in bed and I'm worried that reading in the dark will damage his eyes. Obviously, I never ever thought that I would feel this, any more than I'd wipe their faces with a spat-on tissue. But needs must etc.

oh also could it be one that he can turn off at the light end, rather than just at the plug?

IKEa? I've looked, but I don't really know what I'm looking for.

Thanks a lot to anyone who responds..

Have you looked in Homebase? I know they used to have desk-type lamps, with a bendy neck, but with a big sturdy clip on the end - lampshades in pink, purple, turquoise, black & white IIRC.

I will have a google but they may be shop only (if they still do them of course)

(They use those tiny push-in bulbs, I think they may only come in 1 size in which case no choice of brightness.)

yy, here you go!

This one's "pink", website shows a black one as well, they prob have other colours in store

onebatmother · 04/06/2008 01:12

Hmm, no, WW, we don't have one near us. thank you for googling. But I wonder if that's going to be a very wide-spreading light? (inarticulate)

What I'm hoping for is for someone to come on and say - I have this and it's what you need.

(It will have a bedside-light type switch down the wire a bit btw)

WendyWeber · 04/06/2008 01:13

Well, how wide it spreads depends on where you point it...

You can get tiny ones that clip on to your book from places like Innovations?

WendyWeber · 04/06/2008 01:14

Like this. Needs button batteries though.

What you need is a headtorch, much better than the clip to the book type of lights.

You can even get children's ones in millets although any headtorch will do as the straps can be shortened to fit any head.

I wouldn't get anything that isnt LED,as we had a thread about that a little while ago,and one of the posters said she checked on her DD as she is an avid reader and shares her room, and she'd fallen asleep, the Light she had had burnt a hole in Duvet cover, and was "working" its way down to the Duvet! I've got a light like the first link from WendyWeber, doesn't get hot and I havent had to change ay batteries yet(got it for Christmas)

OverMyDeadBody · 04/06/2008 08:41

That's why headtorches are good, they're LED and don't get hot.

onebatmother · 05/06/2008 12:11

Oh sorry, how rude of me - missed these last posts. I'll have a look at headtorches, but worry that when he moves he'll attract the attention of not-quite-asleep dd - like a big beacon of boy.

Will definitely take the advice on LED's though - thanks sawyer64

I think the headtorch idea is good. To solve the problem of your DD being disturbed by the light, could you rig up a ceiling-hung blackout lined curtain beside the bunkbed? It might make a lovely reading den?
