stairgate to fit wobbly victorian stairs???

Can anyone recommend a stairgate which can attach to uneven surfaces like rounded spindles on victorian stairs. We need to attach one which would go into a wall with a wide skirting board at one side and a rounded spindle of the bannister on the other side. Any ideas?

I hope someone answers this thread, because we have the same problem.

Fix a baton of 2"x"2 timber to the spindle and another to the wall if you have to. Doesn't look pretty but does the trick of giving you a straight surface to fix or tension the gate to.

not done it myself - we went without a gate, but i recall someone suggested fastening the batten to the bannister with cable ties to avoid drilling into the wood

Failing that is there anywhere ales yuo could put the gate - across the bedroom door?

"else you" - sorry typing too fast

We had exactly the same problem in our last house (Victorian terrace where everything was a bit wonky!). We used the kiddy gate www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2267704.

Its a bit tricky to get the knack of opening but was ideal for an odd/wide space.

Sorry meant to say kiddy guard!

This is not the 'correct' answer, but I just had to put in lots of cup mats to make it fit.

We have a small set of stairs down to the kitchen, a flight up to a landing with bathroom and 1 bedroom and another flight up to other bedrooms so we are trying to just have two stairgates so one is going to be just outside a bedroom on first floor but other probably needs to be on top of the small flight down to the kitchen so thats where the problem lies- was really hoping not to have to use battens - what about those tension ones that dont need screwing in? with suction cups?

Yep I'd recommend the kiddy guard. Brilliant.

Ditto the KiddyGuard. We have it across the wide arch between our knocked-through kitchen and dining room. It rolls back, so when it's shut it's completely out of the way, which is great. It'll be perfect for your spindly (and probably gorgeous) bannisters: it came with circular clamps to attach with, around the bannister, rather than violating it with a drill (I'm still recovering from doing this to mine, before I found the kiddyguard).

In short: expensive, but great. You get used to the fiddly opening, though you'll have to be letting your guests in and out all the time. Or they can hop over. I'm a short-arse and I can manage it.
