They really need to change the wrapping paper, it is so hard to remove and feels so wasteful.

I like the mince being in the vacuum packed wrappers, although I agree with Rainydayinlondon that keeping the meat counter would have been better, they are cutting down their staff so much though with the removal of the staffed tills as well. I hate it.

Youreshitimnot · 14/09/2025 11:00

I hear you with the lids!
Not hummus as it's the food of the devil, but dips, yogurts, cream - give us back our lids!
It's definitely not helped the environment in this house as I've bought so many different sort of silicone / reusable lids but they never seem quite the right size!

If anyone has the holy grail of reusable lids please post links!

Evenstar · 14/09/2025 11:02

So annoying, lids, wrapping paper and the mince is so hard to break up and really unappetising 😡

FallingIntoAutumn · 14/09/2025 11:09

I put cream and dips in jars once I’ve opened them.

I was in France recently, they still have their plastic tops. I can see it’s like wrapping veg in plastic, it prolongs the item so it’s less likely to waste which means your using less resources to grow / make more. But. Then. Your left with the plastic.

Ratafia · 14/09/2025 11:21

I have no problem with the mince wrapping. Happy to have something I can remove easily and chuck in the bin without dealing with a tray with blood in it. It makes it easy to rinse off the mince, too.

cariadlet · 14/09/2025 11:44

BlueSkySunshineDay · 14/09/2025 08:24

And put the bloody lids back on your houmous too please!!!!

I hate this so much. I get that it's to save plastic but the houmous dries up so quickly.

Gertrudetheadelie · 14/09/2025 13:05

It is exactly what we want to happen though - shifting responsibility from the individual needing to recycling to the big corporations for plastic use. There's a long way to go, of course, but I'm glad that the supermarkets are trying and not just telling us to recycle (when, in our case, we can't bloody recycle anything easily anyway!)

cadburyegg · 14/09/2025 13:09

God it’s AWFUL. I nearly threw some of the window the other day. It gives me the rage too

Squishydishy · 14/09/2025 13:14

Doesn’t bother me, they give you extra paper in case some edge bits get ripped. Happy to have this new packaging for the environment

Shutupkeith · 14/09/2025 13:16

OMFG I was absolutely cursing at the exact same thing this morning. DD Birthday wrapping and half a fucking role wasted just trying the take the stickers off. What a crock of shit!!

intrepidpanda · 14/09/2025 13:57

BlueSkySunshineDay · 14/09/2025 08:24

All the shops are doing this now. Floppy plastic seal thst you can't reseal.
Does my head in

hexsnidgett · 14/09/2025 14:07

This reminds me of someone complaining that some oranges are too hard to peel.
With the wrapping paper the first 10cm or so is designed to be trimmed off.
Houmous pots can be covered with reusable silicone lids or decanted into another container.
Meat that doesn't come in rigid trays can be put on a plate or baking tray in the fridge.

BlueSkySunshineDay · 14/09/2025 15:18

MumoftwoNC · 14/09/2025 10:18

Why doesn't the manufacturer just tie string around it?? String is biodegradable and can be snipped.

Why does everything have to be so complicated

This!!!

The trouble is that all that plastic really does make a difference when it's a supermarket chain as big as Sainsbury's. I remember reading about Tesco making their cheese plastic less floppy and how much that made a difference!

Our local council also doesn't recycle any plastic that isn't bottle shaped so, for us, that would be less plastic in our black bin which is a huge win when it is only emptied every fortnight. Would stretchy lids not go over the humous?

They could use carboard or string - just get a better bloody design., instead of infuriating your customers.

LadyRoughDiamond · 14/09/2025 09:59

Yes to this too - I am so annoyed that they’ve replaced a reusable, recyclable lid with unrecyclable, useless film. And don’t get me started on the mince packaging…

Right?!

I think sometimes cardboard or string isn't as environmentally friendly as you think. Like how paper bags actually use a lot more energy to produce and weigh more so affect pollution from shipping etc (Link to plastic Vs paper ) So the answer, at the moment at least, is plastic but less of it.

RedSkyatNight25 · 14/09/2025 18:13

They’re all like that now. I agree really annoying.

Bolognesdiva · 14/09/2025 18:16

Agree re the paper - I only buy if desperate . With the humous I’m now wasting a freezer bag to keep it fresh so not exactly environmentally friendly

ohyesido · 14/09/2025 19:17

Oh yes I had this dealy yesterday wrapping a present for my nephew. It definitely doesn’t peel!

MrsLizzieDarcy · 14/09/2025 19:18

I bought 12 rolls of christmas wrap last year. Never again.

LinedOverLatte · 14/09/2025 19:21

OMG YES!! This gave me the RAGE the other day - ridiculous and added about an hour to my wrapping time 😂 Wasted loads too, because I got fed up and ripped it.

I shall make my protest at Christmas. They will miss my big spend of 3 for £5. I’m still annoyed about it now actually.

BeMintFatball · 14/09/2025 19:24

NoelFurlong · 14/09/2025 10:07

Omg, you’ve just given me a formerly repressed flashback to last Christmas and the absolutely infuriating wrapping paper. I think it was from John Lewis, but it was sealed like the OP’s with stickers that ripped the paper on removal. It was so annoying and wasteful.

I confess to also having an absolute rage at John Lewis wrapping paper

Bruisername · 14/09/2025 19:50

The thing is that even if you accept that you are losing the first ten cms it’s still a bloody hassle getting the things off

and you lose your lovely clean line

Niceonegeezer · 14/09/2025 20:01

I've learn't recently you can freeze humous - been great since I'm the only one who eats it in my house. I portion it up into small pots.

MicroPlastics are polluting our waterways. It never breaks down. . Paper and board are more biodegradable eventually.
