What does everyone wear to the gym?

I’m late 30s, mum of three, I don’t want to look ‘trendy’ as such but my gym wear currently consists of some leggings and a few sad baggy T-shirts and I’d like to upgrade.

I’m not keen on anything cropped but happy to have shoulders/ arms and legs out.

Everyone in my gym seems to be either young or male, so I don’t have much inspiration.

What does everyone wear to feel good when working out?

Matalan has a decent range of sportswear. I like their capri length leggings. I have some tops from there and some from curvissa as I wear plus size on top.

Leggings and a half-way decent but perfectly ordinary t-shirt

Mumblechum0 · 31/08/2025 12:28

I like pineapple for leggings, Nike for tops, as they’re quite long and not too tight fitting

Leggings and t shirt.
I like sweaty Betty and keep an eye on their sales.
CRZ on Amazon has some good leggings.
My daughter swears by gym shark and lululemon. They are not cheap.
sainsburys and M&S do some good stuff.

Sweaty Betty sometimes have outlets and also deals on Wowcher every once in a while. M&S do dupes of them as well!

Sports leggings (with pockets for
phone and keys). Sports top (t shirt style), sports style bra but without masses of support as I’m not doing cardio and some Nike Metcons as I like the relatively flat sole for doing weights in.
Generally very plain and run of the mill. Functional I guess!
And my headphones!

Me too. No need for anything fancy.

I look like crap in the gym, all sweaty and old so I wear llama leggings colourful joggers which suit me better than leggings and a normal teashirt, normally a cotton traders one because they are cheap, come in loads of colours and I can match them with my joggers. I try to avoid anything baggy, just comfortable.

I was in sweaty betty at the weekend. Getting that tight lycra on nearly finished me off. I told the sales girls my lycra days are over and they all sniggered.

EmpressaurusKitty · 31/08/2025 12:40

My old Sports Direct running shorts, which have lasted nicely, & T-shirts from SD or Decathlon. I usually end up sweaty so I want stuff that can cope with that.

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 31/08/2025 12:41

@Gettingbysomehow I run and hate anything moving on me when I’m running so the lycra battle is worth it. The leggings stay where I put them 🤣

AtlanticStar · 31/08/2025 12:46

Well fitting leggings (purple usually with a thick black waistband); beachwear type loose-fitting sleeveless tops (boho style) with the sports bra showing through. Sports bra is either black, white or very colourful to go with whatever top I'm wearing. Socks also colour co-ordinated, and quality shock-absorbing trainers. Don't have a large bust, so sometimes I'll just wear a swimming costume over the leggings, then jump in the pool after.

I really like the look of the Nike Metcons, thanks!

Glad everyone else is in leggings and T-shirts. All I see is young women in fabulous tight leggings and crop tops and it’s just not quite me. I do think having a nice outfit makes me more likely to enjoy going though…

Oh, I see them too. I do see what you mean about nice outfits but I don’t think it’s something I’d get round to doing anytime soon.

I wear patterned leggings (usually Sweaty Betty bought from their outlet on ebay) and a gym top that sort of goes with it - eg if the leggings are navy with blue and grey splatter pattern I might wear a grey top - I like Tog24 tops as they are a bit longer than most but they come up huge. A couple of years ago they did a lovely navy one with a small pink cross strap detail at the back that both my daughters asked for when they saw mine.

Titasaducksarse · 31/08/2025 15:34

Sweaty Betty leggings as they hold everything in and no knickers showing with a m and s active tshirt.
In my gym rarely is it crop tops and arses out...and that's just on the men 🤣

Buscake · 31/08/2025 15:39

I rate the M&S stuff
