husband and i share cooking (but he enjoys it more and had greater success than i) and he would prefer gas for controlability but i think ceramic would be so much easier to keep looking clean

surely ceramic can be controlled just as well?

am off out now but will reply later in day

When I moved here, there was no gas in the kitchen. Paid £400 to provide a supply with pipes running under the dining room, out the external wall, round and into the opposite side of the house to wall where the cooked is.

Yep, gas.

yomellamoHelly · 31/05/2008 12:48

Replaced a ceramic hob with gas. MUCH easier to use. Prefer the look of the gas hob too.

wheresthehamster · 31/05/2008 12:59

If you have young children I would go for gas. It's so obvious when it's on.

Last week one of the plates on our ceramic hob was on for 24 hours. No one realised it hadn't been switched off from the previous evening and someone could so easily have burnt themselves. Luckily my children are older and nothing on earth would persuade them to go near the oven it was me who nearly lost my fingers. (Blamed dp obviously) But I realised it's so easily done. Also they don't cool down for ages and often I have put plastic utensils down not thinking and they've melted.

I haven't had gas since 1985 and miss it!

maidamess · 31/05/2008 13:00

I've got gas.

Pass me the Rennies.

poppy34 · 31/05/2008 13:01

gas - ceramic more temperamental than naomi campbell on a flight

TsarChasm · 31/05/2008 13:02

Gas hob. Electric oven.

gas gas gas - I hate ceramic. We had it in a previous house (fitted hob) and it was awful.

If you turn down/up a gas hob it gets instantly hotter/cooler whereas a ceramic takes a bit longer to heat up and a LOT longer to cool down, which is a pain when your sauce or whatever is burning.

They are also dangerous to children and cats because they stay hot for quite a long time after you switch them off but this isn't always obvious. A friend's cat was burnt after walking across her ceramic hob - it had been turned off and the plate looked black (iykwim) but was still hot enough to scald her poor kitten.

sophierosie · 31/05/2008 21:23

Have a look at induction - its instant like gas and cools down a lot quicker than ceramic. V impressed with it!

LazyLinePainterJane · 31/05/2008 21:23

We went for ceramic but only because we couldn't have the gas.

Would have preferred a gas hob though, so much better.

Gas hob, electric oven. Best combination, IMO.

Shitemum · 31/05/2008 21:24

Gas - why has no-one said 'get one with a dark-coloured surface so it doesnt show stains'? There, I've said it.

Kindersurprise · 31/05/2008 21:24

gas

Mum forgot to turn off the ceramic hob and when she was cleaning the floor she put the chairs up on the worktop/hob out of the way. The smell of burning plastic/foam was disgusting (not to mention incredibly dangerous) and took ages to go away.

Shitemum · 31/05/2008 21:24

Oh, and make your DP clean it, always!

Crunchie · 31/05/2008 21:25

They are not that hard to keep clean, most of the removeable bits can go in the dishwasher!!

I use Lidl W45 or whatever super power spray stuff, works a treat every time

gas every time.

leccy for the oven tho (I have a gas oven and I hate it, esp for baking)

theyoungvisiter · 31/05/2008 21:29

Bit puzzled abotu all this "gas hard to clean" stuff tbh.

I never use any harsh sprays or have to scrub mine - I just wipe up any major spills as they happen, and once a week give it a wipe with a very wet sponge and some washign up liquid - job done.

expatinscotland · 31/05/2008 21:30

GAS!

ooooo, in my dreams!

tassisssss · 31/05/2008 21:34

gas every time

we have ceramic and i HATE it. nightmare to clean and impossible to accurately control temperatures as it cuts on and off so you can't just let something simmmer

VictorianSqualor · 31/05/2008 21:37

I have ceramic, have had at the last two houses i rented, much prefer gas.
Electric fan oven though.

janeite · 31/05/2008 21:38

Gas hob, electric oven. It's no problem at all to keep gas hobs clean, honest (I just let dp do it!!!).

babyboo1and2 · 31/05/2008 21:39

we will be getting a dishwasher too (budget depending) so crunchie's idea to put removeable bits in it appeals and so decision has been made - gas it is

thanks everyone
