Swim hat that actually works

Is there such a thing as a swim hat that actually keeps the water out?

It’s easier to wash your hair afterwards than try and keep it dry…

Also interested to know if anyone has found one @RatCamHeyHey I’ve had no luck. They all leak.

Hohofortherobbers · 25/08/2025 21:22

Are they meant to keep water out? I just thought it was for pool hygiene and swimmer comfort

Ineffable23 · 25/08/2025 21:23

I think the likelihood of them keeping water out is low to nil. You would have to have an essentially airtight seal round your whole head while moving your head through the water and moving your head and neck to breathe.

No, I use a long hair Speedo cap because I have a big head, and the regular one was so tight it felt like it was going to tear my ears off! Even then with it so tight my hair didn't stay entirely dry.

I do see some women in the pool with a more elegant head-wrap type hat, but they tend to keep their heads out of the water, so I suspect they're not watertight either.

My hairdresser advised me to wet my hair thoroughly in the shower before putting my (regular, leaky) hat on and going in the pool. I still wear the hat to keep the chlorine off as best I can, but he said if the hair is saturated with fresh water to start with, it won't take up nearly as much pool water.

I don't know if it does make a difference, but it made sense to me!

I'd still wash my hair after, but the chlorine water wreaks havoc with my lowlights!

I use that one - it's the best I've found so far, but I wondered if there was anything better. Wishful thinking maybe!

As said above, the best thing to do is shower before going in then your hair doesn't absorb as much chlorine. It doesn't solve the problem of not getting your hair wet though.

I did see something online about somebody wearing 3 different swimming hats and that worked but it seemed too much hassle and I can imagine it giving them a headache afterwards!

Swim caps are not for keeping the water out and your hair dry.

Wet your hair before putting the cap on, apply a protective product, wash afterward.

Thank you - can you recommend a protective product?

Yes - it's bad enough with one!

I used to be a lifeguard. The best thing to do if you don't want chlorine in your hair is to soak your hair under the shower before you get in the pool and then put your hat on . Those hats for long hair are good.
