18 month old slumping and straining neck in a Maclaren Triumph - more upright buggy suggestions pls?

DD 18 months seems very slumped in her Triumph thought it would get better as she got older but now she is straining her neck to sit upright. I don't think we can go on like this. I've always had problems with getting her to sit in buggies, we have an icandy apple which is more upright but too damned heavy and will ebay it soon. We are ttcing no.2 and worried that I may need a double buggy in the future. However, I'm tempted to buy a Bugaboo Bee and then get a buggy board - probably am being too optimistic and DH would go ballistic.

Any other buggies that are lightweight and more upright. I'm only 5ft tall so that rules out the Techno, as handle height too high.

I don't have an answer, but will watch and see what anyone else says. DD is 18 months, and we've got just the same problem with the Triumph; we hate it, she hates it. I wish we'd got one a bit further up the food chain, with a more upright seat now.

I just got a Quest a couple of weeks ago and it is great! My dd2 is 15 months and she loves it. I am only 5ft too so Techno was rules out there for me too.

Tapster · 29/05/2008 22:14

glad its not just me that has the problem

Actually I had just this problem with the Quest too (DS2 is 12 months) so wouldnt recommend that either.
How about a second hand Bugaboo, such as a Frog or Cam? Much more comfy and go very upright, so easy for your LO to sit up and look around.

Tapster · 30/05/2008 13:09

I thought the quest didn't look much more upright. DH did go mad when I suggested a Bugaboo Bee. Problem with a Frog or Cam is that they are too heavy to push with one hand when my toddler wants to walk, its about the same weight as my icandy.

nice work, tapster... But we got the Maclaren so that we could actually put something else in the boot too. Sigh.

Pannacotta · 30/05/2008 22:38

We have a Frog and its fine to push with one hand, doesnt feel heavy at all.

Shimmer · 30/05/2008 22:50

Ohhh, my DS is 17 months and is really slumped in the Techno (i'm 5'7' so can handle the handles!). So I really dont think the Techno is any better than the Triumph. I was going to go for the Quest too, but seems that might not be much better either....

Hmmmmm....there MUST be an alternative to spending a fortune on a Bugaboo...

angelstar · 30/05/2008 22:58

Don't get the bugaboo bee if your little one wants to sit more upright. I had the bee briefly and the seat is slightly reclined.

Tapster · 31/05/2008 16:21

frog doesn't have adjustable handle height does it - for that money I would need one, i'm 5ft my DH is 6ft. There doesn't seem to be a solution. Shimmer the Silvercross Pop is meant to be more upright, but same handle height as the Techno so worth having a look if you are tall.

Have you tried a Maclaren volo, its light and upright.

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 16:37

We have a frog and it is fine for DH and he is 6'3" don't worry about it being difficult to push & steer one handed, I can push steer mine one handed with my 2.8 year old in it!

What about a M&P pliko or the chicco ones like the pliko P3, they have much squarer seats.

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 16:40

my graco citisport is very upright as well and again easy to push and steer one handed.

jajoom · 31/05/2008 21:59

The Quest is definitely more upright than the Triumph. I've had all the Maclaren range and the Quest is my favourite. The Techno is nice, but heavy/hard to steer. The Volo is too basic for everyday use.The Triumph handles well, but the seat positions are very limited.
My other favourite is the Micralite fastfold. The seat is very supportive and is raised higher than most buggies. It's also an absolute dream to push one-handed.

bran · 31/05/2008 22:08

No, a Volo is dreadful for posture. I had a Volo for ds but couldn't use it until he was about 2, and even then it wasn't great. I bought a second-hand Mothercare Citilite (pretty much the same thing as a Graco Citisport) and it was much more supportive and comfortable. It was quite narrow though so it would be a bit of a squeeze if your DD is well built. Also although it was lightweight it was hard to tip it backwards with the handle at full height, so a bit of a pain going up onto pavements. That would be less of a problem for you though as the handle would be lower and therefore at a better angle.

msappropriate · 01/06/2008 21:10

children are so different aren't they. Mine were fine in a volo, a bit slumped from 8 months (when I used it going on the tube mainly) but after a year absolutely fine. Mine even slept in it for 2 hours at a time. Great for every day use except small shopping basket. I used mine every day for over 2 years and its still going strong.

thehairybabysmum · 01/06/2008 21:27

chicco c1, i have this, now using for 8 mth ds2 and he sits really nicely. Also thy have a nice room seat, my ds sits as he would stiing on the floor IYSWIM as it is a big seat base. The Mclarens i have seen seem to have a slaa seat base so their legs hang down and they are kind of suspended byt he crotch strap.

Just looked on the internet, this is the latest version here

ive alwyhs said my buggy perfect apart from that it doesnt face me, thy seem to have updated it so they can face either way so fab i reckon.

naomi83 · 02/06/2008 10:36

if you don't need a recline the bebe confort vit is fab, one handed push, weighs only 4kg, looks cute, can change handle height to suit you and very upright. my ds loves it

EffiePerine · 02/06/2008 10:39

is the harness the prob? The Pliko has a floating harness (i.e. baby not pinned to back of seat) which I think is much better, esp with nosy children

bambi06 · 02/06/2008 10:40

i find chicco ones , the type with bumper bars are more upright and definitely more room, ive had too and very happy with both plus they last well

lynniep · 03/06/2008 09:32

we got a silver cross pop because I tried every buggy in kiddicare and this had the most 'upright' seat.

pinkrose · 03/06/2008 09:44

Hi I've this seat can be very upright or reclined ,my 10 month old isn't slumped in it at all.I just love it.

strawberriesandcream01 · 04/06/2008 17:57

I have the techno xt, great buggy but my DD is coming up 2 and I really want something smaller, don't fancy swapping do you?!!!!

Tapster · 04/06/2008 20:07

I'm too short for a techno xt at only 5ft the handle height is too high for us shorties, same for the silvercross pop. Other posters say the techno is not much better for uprightness either.

My search continues - i really want to spend around £100 no more in case I need to buy a double buggy in the future.
