Very small microwave

We have lasted a very long time in not ever owning a microwave. Although I am now thinking of getting one. I seem to see a lot of recipes now that call for one and I think actually, that would be so much easier and quicker. Less washing up too.

It must be really small, ether to go in the pantry with of course ventilation or on the worktop (reluctant!).

What would I use it for i hear you ask.

  • Melting chocolate (easier then a bain Marie)
  • Steamed puddings
  • Reheating meals/lunches I have already cooked from scratch ( I have already got into batch cooking recently)
  • Gnaching for cakes

I don't think I will use it all the time, but I do think it will be handy.

What can you recommend? Thanks.

I wouldn’t bother as you have gone so long without. Steamed pudding would be nice. Think you will be disappointed with the rest.

I do all my veg in them. Keeps the vitamins in and no water waste.

Also good for reheating.

We made loads of Christmas sweets and OMG the time saved not using a bain Marie! Game changer.

Some are slightly smaller than others but none are very small. I think most people use them for only a few things.

We need a small microwave due to rearranging the kitchen, I'm looking at this small Panasonic. It still has useful programmes like defrosting. If you search for compact microwave most brands have one a similar size, this is as small as they come but still should fit a dinner plate. www.currys.co.uk/products/panasonic-nnst22qbbpq-compact-solo-microwave-black-10276222.html

How have you survived this long without a microwave? How do you reheat leftovers?

I have a Swan retro one that is very small and also looks nice

FancyCatSlave · 05/08/2025 22:01

Just get the cheapest one going that fits your dinner plates. They don’t all, and there’s nothing more irritating than not being able to fit your plate in!

But otherwise for what you want it for, cheap is all you need.

⬆️This. We use ours multiple times daily, DH uses the air fryer and the oven is basically ignored!

It's very rare we have left overs. I usually only cook the amount we need.

Thanks 😊

I regret buying the air fryer! We only used it for chips. We are vegetarian, so I think it's a bit useless for us.

Yes porridge! I have it every morning. That would also be handy.

Do you not bake or roast veg?

Do you not bake or roast veg?

Of course, all the time. Why?

Why not use the air fryer for this?

I have tried but I prefer doing it in the oven. Also things like roast potatoes, I didn't like in the air fryer.

Oh well, I can’t see the difference but each to their own.

murasaki · 05/08/2025 22:49

I use ours for reheating leftovers for lunch, and for steaming veg, it's useful for that.

RedRiverShore5 · 05/08/2025 22:49

There is a 14L Russell Hobbs one at Asda, which is about the smallest size you can get, we used to have a 14L Daewoo for the caravan. The thing with the small ones is that they are not that much smaller in size than a 20L one which will be more powerful and much more choice. Like PP we have the Swan Retro one (20L) and am happy with it and it looks nice.

lostmyearringsagain · 08/08/2025 19:42

I cook all my veg in the microwave rather than boil or steam them.
