Advice on reading lights please - does anyone have one of these?

OK not the most sexy topic but...

DD and DS2 share a room. DD loves to read and is frequently found reading in bed. I have told her no unless light is on - a no-no if DS2 wants to sleep.

So I often find her in the bathroom, curled up against the loo with a book, bless.

Anyway I wondered about this for her b/day soon. Can anyone tell me if it works? It looks v cool but could a 7yo actually sit in bed with it clipped to a Rainbow Magic book and use it? And would it light up the book but not wake DS (who is a good sleeper)? Or is it more of a gadgety Mcgadget type thing for a flash chap?

we have a bunky light and DD1 has it on and DD2 will be soundly asleep.

Check how hot it gets Clary. I got a reading light thingie for ds1, and one evening I popped in to check on him late at night and discovered he was asleep and the light had burned through the duvet cover and was starting to burn a hole in the duvet! (Ds1 was fast asleep)

Needless to say, we don't have such things now!

omg roisin!

How can I check how hot it gets tho before I buy it? That's terrible, was it the same kind of thing??? (horror at thought of what might have happened....)

KathG what's a bunky light???

My tip is to go to B&Q or similar and buy a bendy stem light, and fit a low voltage (LCD?)spot - one of the ones with lots of little 'holes' Too tired to know what it's called but they give just enough light to read by if pointed directly at the book.

I use these to read at night and DH hardly notices

I've got one. It's pretty good. Just really lights up the book and not the room. Mine attaches to the back cover of the book and shines down onto the pages.

I've got this one that you have linked. Can say I've noticed it getting hot,but will do some research(?) for you this weekend to see,and report back.It works really well, but found it a struggle to put it back flat after use,but kids never struggle long, seem to work it out quick!

Clary · 24/05/2008 23:01

Aww thanks ladies.

Nursejo that would be very sweet of you.

If it's too much of a fire hazard (still in [shock about DS roisin) then selfwill's idea might be a goer.

I haven't noticed mine getting hot either.

roisin · 25/05/2008 21:26

I know! Fire is just my all-time nightmare. I just try and not think about what might have happened.

The one ds1 had was on a bendy stem sort of thing ... like the eye of an alien! I think it fixed onto a clamp on the side of the bed.

Clary,I hae completed my Research (just writing up my notes!)My light, the same model as you hae pictured does not get hot at all.My DH says its because its a LED bulb.So this is what you need, whatever Model you choose.

Clary · 27/05/2008 09:59

that's brilliant, thanks nursejo and all. LED is way to go then
