Mattresses - do you get what you pay for?

I'm on the verge of buying a double mattress for my son's room. We've upgraded from single to double bed for him. He'll be off to Uni in a bit over a year, so then it will be his room/spare room. Am a bit shocked at mattress prices. I want natural fibres, not memory foam, pocket sprung. I'd like to support our local independent shop. They've got a mattress for £500. My DH says I should shop around online and find one cheaper. But will I? I don't mind spending a bit more to support a local shop. I'm also wary of buying a mattress online. Or will I save £hundreds? Is £500 about standard for a double mattress? My son probably won't notice too much what he sleeps on!

Cheap mattresses are awful. Very uncomfortable and they don’t last. I think he will notice what he sleeps on if you get a cheap one that ends up lumpy and misshapen in just a few months!

That price sounds really reasonable for something you describe. I bought similar from a local retailer recently and it was a bit more expensive but very much worth it.

Thanks - that's what I think. It's on sale, £499 reduced from £600. So yes, I think it's reasonable. I'd rather pay a bit more and have something that's better quality and lasts a bit longer.

£500 for a double sounds fine. I wouldn't scrimp for a few quids' sake. Even IKEA sells mattresses around that price point.

I think a lot of it is personal preference too. It took DP and I forever to buy a mattress because we liked different things.

I ordered a new mattress from Hypnia on 31 May and still haven't received it, so don't use this company, you don't get emails or any updates either! Go with ANY of the others, you get what you pay for, I thought Hypnia prices were too good to be true, they also take your money before the item has even shipped!

I'd buy as good a mattress I could afford taking in to account what it's being used for. Per night's sleep they are extremely cheap.

£500 for a mattress that will last at least 10 years if it's taken care of. Less than 14 pence per night for your son and visitors to have a good sleep.

I’ve bought a choices pocket 2000 double and the same 1000 pocket single from bed factory direct at different times. Really good mattresses. The double was just over £400 and the single was £375 although this was 2020 & 2021

Have a look at Millbrook beds, they are amazing and you can often pick up a bargain online. Made near where I live in Hampshire.

We have IKEA mattresses and find them really comfortable- not the cheapest the mid price ones.

LuckysDadsHat · 12/06/2025 19:52

I have literally just had delivered a Hypnos Posturecare 7 and it is the best mattress I have ever had! Spend as much as you can afford on a decent mattress! My long term backache which was about an 8 out of 10 pain wise when I woke up in the morning is already down to about a 3 out of 10 after 3 nights!

You definitely can get them cheaper, but whether you should is a different thing! I'd say you're not paying shed loads at 500, its a reasonableprice for a nid range mattress and good to support the local high street. I've bought cheap double mattresses for the spare room which is barely used, for about 250 - it's fine but your son will be on this mattress every uni holiday I imagine and every night till he goes. Our super king was 1400 and was worth every penny, its still comfy and has lasted 8 yrs now. I've found the pocket springs with a memory foam topper suit us best, although memory foam does make me hot and sweaty
They're very subjective so make sure he tests it to check, I know you think he won't care but if he actually does care then you're a bit stuck, so get him to lie on it first before buying

Here's an example of one that does save you hundreds, but who knows if its comfy or if it will last!

Very happy with my £150 IKEA mattress, don't forget a mattress protector :)
