Savers - asked donation at the checkout. Is it new?

Posting here cuz it's Savers specific. hope thats ok.

Just been to a local Savers.
When it comes to pay (human cashier), she mumbled something and when I tried to tap my card on the pin pad it didn't go thru, so I looked at the pin pad's digital screen carefully, it said something like "Would you like to donate 11p?"

(I ended up donating 11p btw.
Interestingly, it's not showing on the reciept I received🤔although credit card company's status showing the amount I spent on the goods +11p)

I know my local Tesco Express's self checkout asked for donation in the past, but never asked it at Savers before, so i thought to ask!

-Has it been around?
-Can the cashier choose who to ask for donation? (random pick?)
-Do you know who Savers donating to?

Would be interesting to hear if you or your friends work there and know the story behind. 🍹

It’s money and time as well. There are more and more ‘fees’ added to price (admin fee, booking fee, service charge, delivery fee, etc.) but also, after you’ve made a purchase they go after your time and won’t leave you alone! “Fill out this feedback questionnaire”, “scan this QR code and leave us a google review” etc.

Booking fees and admin charges are a massive con.

They're basically saying "This is the price that you need to pay in order for you to obtain the goods or services from me - except, erm, here's an extra compulsory charge that, er, you have to pay in order to be able to, um, pay me that price to buy it... but it's definitely not part of the actual price, oh no."

I don't care how you calculate your prices to include all of your costs and desired profits - that's up to you, as it's your business. I am your potential customer, and my only role is to be given an all-in price and then decide whether or not I wish to buy your goods or services from you at that price.

If you expect me to work out and consider your business calculations for you, you're either grossly incompetent, thoroughly dishonest or both.

The charity shop one is odd.
They ask if you want to add 50p on.
If they want to charge 50p more then charge that.
People will pay £1 for a paperback book. People will pay £1.50 for a paperback.
People are a bit miffed to expect to pay £1 and then asked to add 50p on as extra.

I came here to say that - bought a dress for £9.50 and at the till was asked if I wanted to round it up. I was confused and politely said yes but why not price at £10? Puts me off really but feel for staff/volunteers.

I don’t think it’s going down well in my local branch of Superdrug (not so affluent part of London on market street) as the cashier usually just says “oh forget that” while pressing the “no” button!

Curious as to why it’s only Savers where it bothers you OP?

Hopefully with the turn of the month this has stopped, but our local s drug had it through the whole month of May.

McDonald's too - on their self service screens.
They usually say "would you like to round up".
I do sometimes with McDonald's because I think their charity is an excellent one.

This is the only one I do, I think it’s an amazing cause and they raise millions this way

Yes today just now. Mumbling cashier too so no idea on the charity! I said no..

Did you pay by cash/card? You did right to say No.
My cashier was mumbling with foreign accent (and I didn't really catch if she was talking about the donation tbh. I wonder if that was a tactic😂or she felt bad askig for donation out loud coz other customers can hear??)

We have two card machines at work . One I can decline without asking the other if I customer puts card it is asks afterwards .

let me be clear the staff don’t like asking either . I have no interest if you do or don’t .. it does document it on your receipt though

I just had a look online about Savers.
I found a statement that said they were supporting Marie Curie but that was dated 2022 so I don't know if they still support them.

Oh good find thank you.Other poster went to Savers today (must have better eyesight than me) wrote it's for Marie Curie. I found another article dated Nov 2022 that Savers and Superdrug raised £10mil for Marie curie (didn't go into read when the fundraising started, though). I believe they are like sister companies.

Seasalt do this too, and McDonald's. I donate of I support the charity only.

We went there on Sun so it was already June. We paid by cash but we weren't asked anything, no donation, no perfume/batteries. So I simply wonder if that happens only for a card payment customer (most likely?) or the cashier randomly picks customer and ask to donate 😅
