My mum criticises my clothes

I love charity clothes and I buy a lot from Vinted. I have my own style like that of the 60s era and generally folk/hippy clothes (large flowered clothes, puff sleeve dresses). She says I dress too young and how she preferred I dressed decades ago in classy NEXT clothes. I love corduroy pinafore dresses too. I tell her I don't want to dress like a fuddy duddy and to think Zandra Rhodes too and that's me! I just bought a vintage red, orange and yellow flowered dress too, but she's turned her nose up at it. How can I get her to accept who I am?

You cannot make her like your clothes or your style. Why would you want to
You're an adult you don’t need mum approval. Frankly, who’d actually want their mum to say Gee, nice dress

You and your mother does not have the same clothing style, and that's okay. But it's not okay for her to criticise your style.

Do you get on with your mum otherwise? Does she show you that she loves you? Do you like spending time together+

Edited

We get on sometimes, sometimes not. But I need to be me and not be someone else.

Just ignore her and be yourself. I couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks of my clothes, including my mum!

Renabrook · 19/05/2025 08:24

Why does she have to?

Huh? 🤔

Why does she have to? You’re an adult and can wear what you want. Why do you need your mother to approve of your clothing? So what if she hates it?

RampantIvy · 31/05/2025 08:13

I don't like everything DD wears, but it is nothing to do with me and I keep my opinions to myself.

Dress how you choose.
Stop calling others 'fuddy duddy' though. 🫣

I don't call anyone fuddy duddy. If you'll see in my question, it says 'I' don't want to dress like a fuddy duddy 😉

It’s healthy to accept that your dc are not you and vice versa. Assuming you’re 20+ feel sorry for her that she’s so enmeshed and don’t seek her approval.
If my children get tattoos, piercings weird clothes it impacts me absolutely zero. I did enjoy turning up to a family party to troll my mum in this though.

Eh?
'Like a fuddy duddy' implies you think such a thing exists.

You enjoyed wearing that? Why?
(It's up to you what you wear, clearly, but it's quite odd looking).

You can see more if you tap on it. I certainly did. It’s meant to be this costume.

Ah. Not someone I take style tips from, but each to their own. 😬

It's lovely. I couldn't card less what someone wears. It's never bothered me, as long as they're happy.
Mum and I popped into Primark today and she said I've got too much blusher on. "Are you hot or something"? she asked. I just kept quiet. She asked me if she offended me and I shrugged and said, "I can't be bothered anymore".
